Now that Kindles are the right side of £100, they're looking appealing to me. The problem is I do a lot of my reading in the tub. Now I'm not expecting a Kindle to survive a dunking, but do they cope OK with hot and steamy bath rooms and a bit of damp?

I don't know anything about them, but... can't you just put it inside a ziplock bag?

Will a ziplock bag still allow me to turn pages?

mine (with keyboard) seems pretty well sealed. I'd imagine a newer (sans keyboard) version will be better

Probably depends if you go for the keyboard one or the touchscreen one.

Keyboard one has page turn keys either side of the screen.

I would have thought that the touch screen one wouldn't work through a dry bag.....

Can't speak for Kindles, but my touch screen phone works in a waterproof/dry bag

I was just looking for the touch screen version, looks like it isn't available in the UK? Its only on Amazon.com unless someone can prove me wrong?

Safer than a toaster in the tub.

I got an ear-bashing off Easyjet for mine the other day.

[awaiting take-off]

[EJ] All electronic devices must now be switched off!
[EJ - to me] Sir, all devices MUST be switched off!
[me] Umm, sorry, but it doesn't really switch off.
[EJ] MUST be switched off!
[me] Umm, well, I can hit the sleep switch? (presses switch, brings up picture)
[EJ] Sir, it doesn't appear to me that you've switched it off. This is for your own safety!
[me] Umm, sorry, but that's as off as it goes. It doesn't use any power unless you turn a page.
[EJ] Could you please just switch it off!?
[me] (Closes case over) Umm, will that do?
[EJ] Humph!

Wasn't trying to be a bawbag, I really couldn't switch it off to her satisfaction short of smashing it!

You need to move out of paperbacks and cheap flights to a different customer segment 😉

I use mine (keyboard version) in the bath frequently without problems. Never dunked it though.

It is off. There's still something on the page, but that's cos it remembers what it was last showing when you power it down.

if you pull and hold the power button for 5 seconds the screen goes blank. I know this as a hostess made me do it 'its how to turn them off properly'. it boots just as fast so i'm suspicious the only thing it does is blank the screen, but useful to know for more dumb cabin crew 🙂

actually, turns out she was right..

from http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200487820

Power switch: puts your Kindle Keyboard to sleep, wakes it up, and turns your Kindle Keyboard on or off. To put your Kindle Keyboard to sleep, slide and release the power switch; a full screen image appears on the display. While your Kindle Keyboard is asleep, other keys and buttons are locked so that you don't accidentally change the place in your reading. To turn your Kindle Keyboard off, slide and hold the power switch for four seconds until the screen goes blank and then release. To wake up or turn on your Kindle Keyboard, slide and release the power switch again.

If your Kindle Keyboard does not power on or is unresponsive during use, try resetting the device by disconnecting your Kindle Keyboard from any power source, and then sliding and holding the power switch for 20 seconds before releasing.

Tip: Your Kindle Keyboard will also go to sleep by itself after ten minutes if you are not using it. If your Kindle Keyboard had wireless on prior to going to sleep, it will continue to receive your regularly scheduled subscriptions while in sleep.

I wish it would randomly download more pictures for the standby screen when you are online. Much as I like seeing Agatha Christie, John Steinbeck and the Lindisfarne Gospels (or whatever it is) some fresh faces would be fun.

Had this on a BA flight the other day. Another passenger in the same row had a Kindle too, we'd been spotted and the cabin crew guy insisted on seeing us both switching them off fully. While my phone was in my pocket, in flight mode but not shut off. Nothing like the illusion of safety though, eh?

Disabling wireless (flight mode, etc) and taking off headphones for takeoff/landing both have sound reasons, but going beyond that is pretty silly IMO. If in-flight wifi and mobile are being rolled out and planes aren't falling out of the sky, I fail to see what problem devices in sleep (but not fully off) modes with wireless off might possibly cause.

Kindle support is amazing.

I broke my screen. Called them Saturday, free replacement arrived today, they took mine away as well at no cost.

Nothing like [s]the illusion of safety[/s] making a reasonable effort though, eh?

If a plane crashed cos some kid's Nintendo had caused a problem with the avionics, would you want to be on it?

Well I never and such-like!

Just tried that and it does indeed. Have to hold it for ages though. I didn't know that! (Only got it a week ago).

If there was the remotest possibility that a left-on Nintendo, Kindle, phone, etc. could cause a plane to crash, would you get on it?

Touche.

Still - it's not that hard to turn off your stuff is it? Even though it's a long shot?

No, I agree with you, it's not a bad idea in principle. It's just kind of defeated before it starts by all the left-on stuff that ends up in the hold, overhead lockers, etc. Not to mention flying over mobile phone masts, TV transmitters, etc!

Makes ****-all difference as well. My own background is in aero engineering. I live next-door to a pilot. He has his phone and macbook out in the cockpit pretty-much all the time!
