Do they do pictures, diagrams, tables etc? I am starting to refer to a lot of textbooks lately and it's not that easy to cart a load of textbooks around. Would a kindle be suitable?
Yes and no. Diagrams will be shrunk to fit so small ones will be fine, large scale ones are a bit shrunk.
It depends on how the book is formatted. If it's been converted into an ebook should be OK but the pictures/diagrams will be shrunk down. I also have some books in PDF format on mine which are a bit more awkward to scroll through the pages but you can zoom into the diagrams in PDF formats. You can search and bookmark in both formats as well as make notes.
Get the bigger DX model, the smaller one is useless for PDFs. (OK: you can read them, and it'll do if you haven't anything else to hand, but the zooming is a pain...)
Guy at work has one, and it's perfect for studying.
Not great on it's own when lots of diagrams but when combined with the Kindle reader app on PC (and aPhone) it makes a great combination. I use the PC at home to do a lot of the reading, and the highlighting and note taking is great. Then open same book on Kindle and synch all the highlights and comments to take with me for reference (think the synch on notes only works on the books bought from Amazon ?)
I bought one to use with reference books and things and it wasn't very good. as above, its too small for PDF's but the biggest problem was its very slow to flick back and forward through pages looking for things. Might not be a problem for textbooks if you're reading them more like you would a book though.
