I'm thinking about getting one but I've been reading many reviews about uneven lighting and strange colour casts etc. Are they as bad as they seem to be? I'm afraid try before you buy isn't an option for me, neither is continually sending it back until i get a good one!!
I've got one. It's pretty good.
The backlight is even enough, there's a tiny bit of variation at the bottom of the screen, but not so much that you notice after you start reading. There is a very slight colour cast on low-light settings, the light is tinted ever so slightly green-blue when fully dimmed, but it's a black and white screen so that doesn't matter, does it? It's quite a nice colour anyway, I think.
Overall it kicks the bobbins out of reading on an LCD phone/tablet screen, which was the only half-decent option for reading in the dark before (can't be doing with those rubbish clip-on light things). I like.
as with all adverts they do not tell the truth. have had mine since christmas enjoy reading it,yes the light is a little uneven can be a little yellow at the edges but very easy on the eyes when reading much better than reading a paper book
agree with mintimperial comments
I have one as well, they are not perfect, but what is?
I really like mine, and would buy another.
The backlight is uneven on the edges and bottom - exactly as mentioned above. Even so the contrast is so much better that beats paperbacks hands down as well as the previous kindle. You do get used to the uneven backlight anyway and it is on the edges so it does not affect much of the text.
FWIW, it's not backlit, it's frontlit.
Mine has the uneven light along the bottom, but it's all in the "margin" and doesn't affect reading at all. Other'n that, it does exactly the job it's supposed to- it's good enough that I have basically nothing to say about it, it just took over from paper in a really dull manner.
I have a kobo glo and it's great - not noticed anything untoward with mine

Can't say I've ever had any issues with reading books on my phones or my pad, and I've been doing it since 2011. I set maximum screen brightness about 50%, which gives me a nice level of illumination for reading in the dark.
