Quite tempted by the new Kindles.

Only really looking for an e-reader, but the the tablet functions of the Fire might be quite useful.

Is the colour screen on the Fire better or worse than the e ink screen of the standard kindle for reading?

Can't answer you directly but I've got a normal Kindle for reading and it's great, works really well as an e-reader. Also have a tablet for tablety type stuff. Not sure merging the two together would work that well, but I've not used a Kindle Fire so could be wrong.

Had a Kindle 3G for a few years and it's great for what it does.

Got a Galaxy Tab which is great for Tablet-y stuff, but less so for reading. The lit screen is harder on the eyes than the Kindle screen.

So, the best bet is have both. Or decide where your priority is and go that way.

Have a kindle and a fire, kindle defo better for reading. As mentioned above back light makes fire more tiring on the eyes.

The e-ink kindle is a superlative screen for books. The Fire is "just" a regular tablet, more versatile but not even close as an e-reader.

Be aware that the kindle fire won't support google play out the box.

But... depends how long you spend reading, on average. If your average reading time is 15mins before bed, and snatching the odd hour now and then - the Fire would be fine and far more versatile. The normal Kindle is a lot better for extended reading, though.
