Calling all kilt wearers...

With a couple of big events this year, I'm tempted to invest in my first proper kilt (already have a cheap, lightweight wool Hector Russell kilt for football/rugby duties - picked up on eBay for only a few quid!).

Full Prince Charlie outfit needed. Not keen to continue shelling out the c.£50-£100 hire cost each time...

Avoiding the sub standard tat shops that claim to be kilt makers, where would you recommend?

Mine was from abernethy highland dress or something like that. Bit it 15years so no idea if theyre any goid still.

I'd get a tweed argyle over a bonnie prince though. Covers more bases more of the time. And just hire a bonnie prince charlie jacket when its really necessary it rarely is...

Theres always some one in their faithers faithers mangy old jacket.

Chisholms in Inverness used to make good kilts. That was 50 years ago. They're still there.

Second Chisolms.

My kilt is nearing 30 years old and still looks good.

It's seen more action than most see in several lifetimes, I'm a piper and used to do loads of weddings , functions and busking.

Got mine in Nicolson on Royal Mile Edinburgh also but can also highly recommend McCalls in Tillicoultry as a few mates got theirs here and they also... ehem...adjusted mine when i gained a pound or too.

… ehem…adjusted mine when i gained a pound or too.

When I bought mind a gazillion years ago the asked if I expected to gain/lose weight so they knew how to set the adjustment range.  I naively told them I'd get thinner.  Nobody every gets thinner.  Have it fit now on the tightest setting.

Macnaughtons of Pitlochry or McCalls in Tillicoultry. Both good.

Geoffrey Tailor in the Royal Mile supplied mine. That was over 10 years ago. It's still on the same buckle hole.
