Or not. Just got back from a thirteen hour, two hospital rollercoaster with Funk Jr. He fell about seven feet out of a tree straight on to his face. Concussion, hole in his chin that had lots of bark in it to remove and a fractured mandible. Along with lots of bruises. Liquid diet for next two to four weeks and several stitches.

All staff at Macc General and Wythenshawe were phenomenal. Looking after a very traumatised nine year old and his parents. Can’t sing their praises highly enough

Didn’t think I could be more proud of my son than I was. Turns out I was wrong. So brave and dealt with the pain and uncertainty so well. Remained his kind, caring and funny self throughout. More concerned for his mum bless him. I was at work whilst he was at Hare Hill with Mrs F, Funkette and his Gran. Some awesome pain killers delivered up the nose had him asking one Dr if they were going to freeze his head and take it off 😂

In his own words “This is the worst day ever” and “I hate trees”

Don’t know why I’m posting this really. Other than to sing the praises of our utterly fabulous, over worked and underpaid NHS workers and to just use this place as a stress outlet. Hope he retains his love of tree climbing.

Another well wisher here. And I also hope he doesn't lose his tree climbing mojo.

I hate trees

There's a job at Sheffield City Council waiting for him!

Wish him well from a fellow chin walloper.

I had a habit of falling on my chin 4 as a kid, 4 times I was stitched back up.

Finally stopped doing it in my 20s...

Glad he's kept his sense of humour. Hope its a smooth and speedy recovery.

LittleMissMC's first trip to A&E was with a hole in her chin after falling off a climbing frame when out with her grandparents.

She's now a teenager and rarely get higher than her mattress these days.

Heal well mini-Funk!

My brother and I reckon we should have the x-ray department at NTGH named after us we visited so often. I'm glad to report that Fazzini-jnr, and Fazzini-jnr-jnr, have kept up the family tradition also.

Nothing wrong with climbing trees as long as you don't stop climbing at the wrong moment.

Between me having a couple of crashes in 2019/2020, and LittleMissMC having a spate of netball related broken fingers, she went from bursting into tears the first time she broke a finger to "I think we need to go and see Dave (the nurse we always seemed to see) again!"

Hope he heals well

Binnerette number 1 was always doing stuff like this when she was young, the ‘best’ of which was fracturing her elbow doing a forward roll off the sofa.

I felt like we were on first name terms with the A&E staff at Manchester Royal. I’m amazed they didn’t get social services involved

She starts uni in September and I eagerly await her tales of UDI’s (Unidentified Drinking Injuries)

Binnerette number 2 was thankfully either more genteel or better coordinated

True story:

Lad I used to sail against (good sailor) had just finished his A levels and was going into the Marines.

Larking around climbed up a tree, branch broke and he fell a about 8 feet

He's now paralysed from the waste down - utterly devastating.

Just sayin'.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Dosed up on painkillers and antibiotics this morning and fast asleep on me again. As an aside if anybody is near Stockport and fancies one adult and one child ticket for the new Spider-verse film showing at The Light cinema at 11:40 please get in touch and I’ll email the tickets. Would prefer that they get used if possible.

Know it is short notice so sorry!

Yep our hospitals are wonderful.
Mini fmp will soon be out climbing trees again, he sounds very brave with agsoh.
I was pushed out of a tree onto the concrete playground during break time, at primary school. the pusher got a caning (1960's don't you know) the pushee (moi) got heavily bruised, lots of scatches and cried a lot. Turned to cycling aged 5 after that.

Jesus. Get well soon.

A tale I'm reminded of which might cheer you up:

I went out one night for a couple of drinks. It was literally a couple, I wasn't drunk. Walking home, I suddenly needed a wee really badly. I came across a pitch dark alleyway between two buildings about the width of a door and thought "that's for me!"

I marched into the alley only to discover the hard way that the inky blackness was hiding a stone staircase which I boldly strode straight off the top of.

Wile E Coyote style, gravity went "ahem!" and I pitched down headfirst, landing full-length in a heap at the bottom. Fortunately a leather jacket (and a good deal of luck) absorbed most of the impact, but I cracked my chin on the edge of one of the steps.

My friends heard my fall from grace, started shouting "Alan? Are you alright?"

"Ow...!" I replied.

Got home, cleaned myself up. Assessed the damage properly the next morning. It wasn't a particularly large cut, but it was kinda deep and it was on my face so I erred on the side of caution and took myself off to A&E.

I should stress, at this point it didn't really hurt other than a dull ache consistent with being thumped in the face the night before. So I see the doctor, he starts kneading it like Playdoh, jesus christ man, ouch! It didn't hurt, now it's throbbing like a bastard!

My eyes still watering, he says "hm, yes, it's quite deep is that isn't it, I'll just pop a staple in that for you." I think OK, cool, that's some medical jargon for a butterfly plaster or something. But no, he then produces an actual staple gun.

Before I can process what's happening fast enough to go "what the fu-" he presses it against my face and KA-THUNK!

"AARGH" I suggested.

My head's swimming as it tries to deal with the fact I've just been attacked with the medical equivalent of Rexel's finest. Then - and I swear to god this is true - he looks at his handiwork, says "hmm... missed" and KA-THUNK! again. JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH AND ALL THE SODDING DISCIPLES!

With me still reeling he packs me off home, tells me to come back later to have them removed. I slope off feeling like I've just been kicked in the face by a mule. A mule with a stapler.

That has cheered me up Cougar. He’s just had his first ‘meal’ porridge put through the blender and drink through a straw. Little guy cried a bit as his teeth and jaw are very sore. We’re now watching Floor is Lava so he’s happier 😊

Having accidents is what being a kid is about. My mate actually did end up with social services paying a visit as both lads had a long list of injuries, usually sustained playing football. The Mrs is a deputy head and he volunteered with Scouts.

I fell out of enough things when I was younger that the dentist wouldn't fit braces as my teeth were at a different angle most appointments 😆
Trees, climbing frames, scaffold, through a barn roof, off a bale stack and progressed to bikes to do it with added speed.
Probably a key factor in my dislike of soup.

Ouch. Sending healing vibes.
My lad did something similar when he was 11. At an end of summer term birthday party/bbq. Car packed for the drive down to the airport for the early flight in the morning. We said we would pop in for a drink and a burger and to say hi. There was a bouncy slide. Someone dared him to jump from top to bottom so he did. When he hit the bottom his knee connected with his face and gave him a joker style slit from mouth towards ear. So off we went to the hospital. “Bring him back in the morning we’ll do it under a general” they said… “ but we have a plane to catch…”

So he bravely had the inside and outside of his cheek put back together under local anaesthetic and probably a bit of midazolam. The Friday night on call max-fax sho did an amazing job and there’s now (11 years later) hardly a sign that it ever happened.

It wasn’t his last trip to a&e- some hockey playing finger injuries along the way, but definitely the most memorable!

They are so resilient at that age. Stuff like this just bounces off them!

My grandad broke his leg playing football when he was a lad. By broke it I mean snappy snappy shin bone pressing against the skin etc. not the fashionable footballers metatarsal.

Now what makes this fairly interesting is he was born in 1915. And it occured early in the first half.

So... They bundled him on to the stretcher...

And finished the game. Before driving him to the hospital.

Oof, recall youngest Davy90 being in the topmost branches of a huge tree in a campsite in France many years ago... At the time all I could do was stand calmly below and ask him nicely to come down carefully, which he eventually did... I was terrified for him, he was having a great time! Thankfully our two have so far avoided A&E in relation to outdoor stuff... A few trips for glass door incidents and insect bite reactions but nothing major.

Hope Funk jnr mends quicky!

healing vibes.

in my son’s group of friends and their siblings there have been 5 broken arms in the past 6 weeks.

one accident very similar to the op’s child, but fell off of a shed, not out of a tree. he’s making a great recovery, so hope the same is true for you guys.

You have my sympathy. Just over two years since our youngest, then 9, decided to show off to his mum just how high he could go on the rope swing in the local woods. He took an almighty run up, launched himself off the edge, then discovered he'd wound up far more kinetic energy than he was capable of handling.

He was bloody lucky that he had his arm over his face when he landed, so despite the C. 2m fall and nasty wrist break he didn't end up with more than superficial head injuries.

He was really brave, and the hospital staff were fantastic. Although it was funny seeing him deal with his deep-rooted fear of needles and suchlike: mostly this involved a barrage of detailed questions to ensure that there were no surprises! I was very proud of how he handled it.

We still occasionally go past and make a mini pilgrimage to 'the crash site' (one of those horrible dry bits with gnarly root knobbles poking up). And I did happen to catch it on video, although we've hardly watched that back as it's not very nice viewing!

He hasn't been on a rope swing yet...
