So our kids have old iPod shuffles - cheap as chips and child friendly. Great on long journey's.
Oldest one is about to be 10, and is asking for an iPod touch. The classic tension of wanting to please & he would use it vs that is chuffing expensive / would he really use it that much / is keeping up with tech & the jone's a valid reason.

Our kids have very limited screen time (@1.5hrs a day, sometimes more, sometimes none), a wii and DS's...

Keen that our kids are comfortable with tech, but not wanting to go overboard / too early with expensive kit...

Thoughts

pervy little brov got one on his 13 birthday. It's pretty cool, my parents had a bit of a fluster when they realised he had access to the internet on it that wasn't controlled, but they sorted that!!

has loads of apps, and not just games, but school ones as well, and my mum uses it for her spanish.

it's cool.

I think he's old enough to have one, BUT, the facetime, full internet bit would worry me!

me too, I *assumed* that there would be a way of blocking that.....? Our home computers have their own accounts, monitored and restricted...

you can passcode the access. So mum/dad set the code, you can't get on.

My daughter was fine with hers at age 10, but she can be trusted to behave.

A year on, with a smartphone and a tablet it [s]hardly[/s] never gets used.

If you want one cheap and your lad doesn't mind having a pink one engraved with 'Millie's iPod, hands off' give us a shout 😉

My 10yr old daughter has one (was actually for her 9th Bday) and has been really good with it.
She doesnt really bother with the internet on it as she has access via laptop/ipad etc.
As with most Ithingy's its the ease of use and mass of apps that will probably appeal and having had the latest shuffle and Nano a Ipod Touch knocks spots off them.

Buy a 2nd or 3rd generation one from ebay or gumtree.... and stick a new back/cover on.

Opendns on your home wifi router gives you a good amount of control. Yes it can be bypassed but it's unlikely to happen when they are 10

I hope

I am not sure how careful your son is with his stuff, but if he drops things, make sure you get him a good case. My oldest has had a 2nd g ipod touch for 2 years, the screens are plastic. It has a good case and is still ok eventhough it has been dropped often, even from a top bunk bed.

The new i pod touches have a glass screen. My oldest now has one of these (and our youngest has the 2nd g one), but we got him a special army case to go with it to protect it. The kids next door broke the screen on theirs in no time. With the new case it seems good.
