My 13 year old lad has really really taken to biking of late, (bike park wales last Monday etc) ever since I rebuilt my old spesh full susser for him back in october. Always had a good interest and wanted to get out but now it's feverish, at any given point if it can be biked it will be. His enthusiasm has rubbed off on other kids and he's actually got other kids in to it and is meeting up with mates out of school to go hooning and jump building in various woods which makes me smile as it's actually got him a friend base going. My only concern is out of the four of them who went out last night he's the only one wearing a lid. He has no qualms whatsoever about wearing it, mainly because he's been riding trail centres with me for the last say 5 years and it's just the done thing. I do wonder if the other parents appreciate what they're up to, I know it's not my responsibility but I do wonder why they don't ask the kids to wear them? Seems a bit endemic round here, my lad is definitely in the minority.

Interfere and face the wrath of a precious parent whilst upsetting the kids or don't gaf?

Get your kid to promote helmets to the others then they can pester their parents for one, maybe.

Cool helmets required though. Piss pot lids maybe. Though I do see a lot of kids wear these but not do them up.

Lad wears his BMX piss pot helmet, decent one with lots of rear cover, when out with his mates. Normal mtb helmet when on the trails.

Wouldn't worry about it.  Something happened in the last couple of decades where the idea that if your child doesn't wear a helmet then your kids should be taken into care as you're clearly an irresponsible parent.  In reality, the helmet's more for the parents peace of mind than actual protective qualities.

If they do start wearing helmets, who's going to make sure they fit and that they wear them properly (I would say half the kids I see wearing helmets either don't fit or are perched on the back of their heads or cocked off to the side at a jaunty angle)?  Also, if they have a crash and hit their head, are they going to replace the helmet or just keep wearing it (wearing a helmet that has been in a crash is NOT better than nothing)?

They will or they won't, don't worry about it.

Half the kids not wearing them properly? - almost every person I see is wearing an illfitting helmet not fastened properly - even at glentress and the like

Have you got an old crashed helmet. I kept one particularly bad one from when i took a fall and hit a tree which has only just held together. Any kids who turn up without a lid get shown it and are told the story behind it. This usually gets back to their parents and they soon have a shiny new one and i feel like I’ve done my dutywithout being interfering.
