Starting to think about Christmas and I really like the look of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fire-Edition-Display-Wi-Fi-Kid-Proof/dp/B00V9852B4

A reasonable price, easy to lock down and also have a great 2 year 'No Quibble' warranty if they do drop and break one.

My kids will be 6.5 at Christmas and I just wonder if they will feel they are too old for one (looking sideways at their friends that are starting to get iPads etc). There is no way on earth I would get them iPads yet but at the same time £120 is a lot to spend if they won't use them thinking they are too old for them.

Thoughts please!

We got GoTab Appi tablets because enough school work now seems to be web / tablet based, they're c. £100 each and one of my teacher wife's colleagues who is into the IT side of learning recommended them. Kids are older than yours and they still use them - we told them that's the choice, that or nothing. Just as well - one cracked screen replaced for £35. Hate to think what that would have been on an iPad.

My son (7) would. Why not get them android tablets (decent ones available for £80 on amazon last I looked) and tell them if they break them they won't get a replacement.

My son's eventually did get dropped and the screen cracked (still useable though) but he's learned his lesson now and is really careful with it. Might get him a new one for Xmas (it's about 2 years old now and starting to slow down). It was a conscious thing to get him one that was breakable...

Tesco Hudls are pretty good for the money, although our Mk1 lasted less than a year before refusing to charge.
The Mk2 is better apparently.

My 6 yr old has a 7" android tablet from Ebay.
Quad core
android 4.4.
Silicon case
Parental controls etc.
it was £35 posted.

TBH it would be good enough for me. She loves it.

similar to this one.

My kids (7 & 4.5) have had a cheap android tablet, but to be frank after a year battery life was shocking and general speed, screen quality etc was poor. They got Hudl 2's for Christmas last year and absolutely love them.

Parent control is great, and the all round quality etc is impressive.

To be honest, they just call them their 'iPads'. As long as they can get the same sort of games their friends have (minecraft being the main one for the eldest) they are not bothered by the difference. The other plus was that they got to choose their tablet and case colours.

We limit their time on them (Saturday morning lie in time for Mum and Dad). Not even had to give them access to the internet/you tube yet.

I guess there must be - the Hudl 2 isn't showing as in stock at Tesco nor Amazon.

Daughter (5) has one of those. It's very good, she much prefers it to the old iPad she was using. The rubber cover is removable if they decide it's too uncool.

rubber cover a must though !

We've all got Hudls in our house and the kids love them (all bought with Clubcard points Boost as well if that's applicable to you).

Yeah we have some Clubcard Points so we could use them, but unfortunately they don't seem to actually be in stock 🙁

Apologies for the thread hi-jack, but how do these Android tablets compare to say a LeapPad?

We are looking to get something for a 2 year old, clearly not to surf the web or play games, but put on some Peppa, Mr Tumble etc for car journeys and loves flicking through the photos on our phones. Also to stop arguments with her big sister, when she tries to play with hers.

The Android tablets look great for just this purpose, and look better value than the LeapPad which is about £50 on Amazon at the moment. Or is the LeapPad more toddler friendly and good value for what it is?

Thanks

The Fire tablet is only £35. May as well just get one of those and if they break it replace it.

I found the Leap Pads to be *really* slow. Painfully so.

The Amazon Fire is only £35 today. I don't think anyone could do better than that TBH - a very flexible option that will grow with the child.

Buy a proper tablet and a decent case. Only smashed one in our house is the wife's.

Yes, was thinking about a Fire tablet too and seems keener priced than the kids bundle version. I will look into that. Presumably you can remove a a lot of the Amazon content and strip it down to its core Android O/S?

We have one which was bought for our eldest a few years ago, it sits in the back of the toy cupboard gathering dust whilst the Hudl get used whenever allowed. To be honest a decent cheap android tablet is going to be much more user friendly, versatile and not reliant on buying a load of carts / proprietary software.

Well I have just bought two of the Fires for £35 each - they are the 'targetted ads' ones (the home screen and lock screen have ads on) but I am sure my little girls will love them. I am going to see if I can root them before we give them as presents so they just run as Android devices though.
