I have been diagnosed with kidney stones, the stones are still in my left kidney and one is making its journey to my bladder. Has anyone had the shockwave therapy or had them blasted by laser to get rid of them? After spending the Bank Holiday weekend in hospital I want to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Nope. I'm due back in October for an MRI and review after having a second bad attack, I produce them all the time and get a general ache fairly often. I do hope you don't get a full blown attack it stings a bit.

I had an attack last weekend - hence the hospital visit. They seem to have settled down at the moment although I do get stabbing pains on a regular basis.

The pain was unbearable, I didn't realise how painful they could be

Tickles a bit! Had me in the fetal position for hours, force fed a pint of water every hour till they passed, with a blocked tube being able to pee a dribble every once in a while, ouch cannot sum it up. I now pay attention to the colour of my pee quite rigorously. The best of it was, mine were small enough to pass thru eventually, so they just sent me home... My sympathy goes to you guys who actually need sonic treatment 😳

Had them twice. First time was in 2010. Second time was about 18 months ago and had laser treatment under general anaesthetic. Going for a pee afterwards was torture and looked like beetroot juice. Had a stent in for 3 weeks. No anaesthetic or sedative when they go in to take the stent out 😯

I had an attack in January and three days of agony over the Bank Holiday. I know the foetal position well!

There's something comforting about it.

I've had stones, the worst one was the size off a £2 coin.
I had to have a stent put in, and then had the shockwave treatment. The shockwave treatment doesn't hurt as such it's just annoying. The worst thing was the stent, it felt like it was constantly rubbing and made me feel like I needed to pee when I didn't, so much so I had to plan my courier route at the time around toilets I could use.
One tip for you, when you have the stent removed don't go and get drunk. I did this and because I then needed to pee so much the 'sludge' that was left over promptly blocked my tubes and resulted in me going back to hospital!

Oh the pain.

Spent a week in agony peeing claret. Cleared itself in the end, but still had to go for a camera inspection. That stung also.

Sorry. I'm not helping here. You have my sympathy.

Ah, the joys of renal colic.

Had one in my mid 20s. I was dry retching with the pain for 8 hours. Just dreadful. A couple of lady nurses I've met reckon it's worse than child birth.

Had them myself many years ago. I thought something had burst inside me. Apparently the pain is supposed to be the closest thing a man can experience to the pain of childbirth. I can still remember when I passed them- oh the overwhelming sense of relief!

So, looks like the best course of action is to avoid them growing in the first place. Any tactics for that? Just keep hydrated?

Keep hydrated yes but some people have raised calcium and are more predisposed to form stones.

10 years ago I had a nephrostomy on my RHS kidney with a week in hospital. I had lithotripsy on my LHS which resulted in renal colic.

They've come back on my LHS. I've spoken to two consultants about options. Lithotripsy - no anaesthetic needed, 60% success and high likelihood of renal colic. Ureteroscopy - surgery and anaesthetic, 90% success rate, discomfort and removal of stent after a couple of weeks. I've opted for the latter.

Good luck!

Seriously, why does severe pain always get compared to childbirth? It's like one sex has the monopoly on severe pain and the ability to both assess and bear pain. What rubbish!

It's a crap rant, but it does annoy me.

I've had what appeared to be a kidney stone floating around a weekend or two back. I had one a few years ago and forgot how much pain there was.

I'm back to the doctors in the morning for another checkup as they're not sure if it's made it's way out or still there.

Keep drinking plenty of water, stay away from anything that is going to make your kidneys work harder than they need to!

Had some a good few years back I was in hospital a week they passed into the bladder where they broke down enough to pass after drinking copious amounts of water.( they were going to extract them from the bladder but they eventually passed naturally). If you think the pain in the kidney is bad. the pain when passing is like passing red hot razor blades given the choice id have them extracted.

Yup three times unfortunately.
First time was a A&E job apperantly i put my hand on my back and fell to the floor at my ex's house.
Woke up in resus to be told I'm going to theatre. As it was stuck in my urethra. They put me to sleep and fished it out through my man sword. Ureteroscopic lithotripsy procedure done. This was 2008 I'd visited the gp a week earlier and was put on antibiotics for a suspected uti.

2015 absolute agony in same kidney for a few days, went to gp and he sent me up to A&E, was booked in for shockwave lithotripsy. It eventually passed when I went for a wee. Nothing touched the pain in A&E.

2016 Same kidney not quite as bad pain, was put on Tamsulosin this time and it passed within three days.

I avoid all caffeinated drinks, drink lots of water and make sure I empty my bladder frequently.

I have three monthly kidney function blood tests and bp monitoring.
I wouldn't wish kidney stones on anyone.

Had my first in 2003, was small enough too pass and that was nasty, fast forward too 2012, had a scan 6mm stone in the right, 11mm in the left, operations planned too have them lasered in turn, a week before the large one made a break for freedom, it didn't get far, and neither did I....Hospital, weekend stay, drugged up on morphine and it settles down, at this point we discovered by the medium of anaphylactic shock I'm allergic too Codeine....

A week later I had the first op, all went ok, had a stent fitted, went home, in a week later for the stent removal, an experience I had too repeat twice, not at all pleasant but no choice....went home and felt ok, then without warning I was rolling on the floor in agony, "drain back" Into the kidney was more painful than the stone, didn't sleep for 4 days and was sick over and over again....

I did get too watch all of London 2012 though!

2017, another forming on the left, so really looking forward too the next episode...

Drink plenty, pee lots and I was advised Cranberry juice is good.....
