I've had this before when moved from a hard water area to soft water, over time the kettle rescaled itself totally.
Thing is I haven't moved. This morning have looked in the disgustingly scaled kettle (over due it's periodic clean) and it's almost shiny, big chunks of scale have fallen off. In the last few weeks I have thought my coffee has tasted different, wife has commented on her tea tasting odd.
5G masts?
Someone's popped in an illegal hookup to Suffolk's water?
Kettle has become self-aware, IoT enabled itself and colluded with machinery at the water company to add zinc?
It’s not the same kettle - your wife broke it and in a fit if guilt bought an identical replacement, scattering some of the broken bits of scale from the old kettle inside the new one in an attempt to cover her tracks
what she was doing when she broke it and why she feels the need to go to such lengths to cover it up you can only speculate.
also covid 19 effects your sense of taste.
You know when folk tell you that "they" are putting something in the water? That.
Check with your local water company, in some areas the water can be blended from different sources. Some could be harder / softer than others. Could be there's been some sort of change.
Have you boiled a fish recently?
Have you seen this lady about lately?

Some water companies have changed the recipe for additives and sterilants during the pandemic.
Erin brockovich was about hexavalent Chrome which is bright green in solution. you'd certainly know about that if you had it in your kettle!
The reduction in air traffic means the ChemTrail Programme has been set back somewhat.
The kettle descaling is a by-product of the unfortunate reduction.
5G masts?
6G - a waterborne mobile phone signal developed as a counter measure to foil David Ike’s campaign to kill 5G with fire.
tomd and derek_starship might have it - it smells unusually chemically (technical term) when you boil it.
That might also mean scotroutes is right.
Has a major user of water in your area shut down in recent weeks e.g. steel mill, foundry etc?
You water company may be using multiple sources including river and bore holes. If the demand is down and the rivers up they may be taking more soft water from one source and less from another.
Where do you live (roughly)?
I live in South Essex near Brentwood, only industry here is tanning studios.
Just offered the wife a cup of tea, she said no - should I induce vomiting or drink milk?
Warmer water (in reservoir) due to the warm weather, (also solubility of various "hard water salts" change with temp) need for more "chemicals" to kill e coli etc.
And, what about blended water?
Glad you asked! We supply some areas with blended water, which is water from more than one source (like reservoirs and rivers). This means blended water can vary in hardness, and sometimes be hard. Why do we blend water?
We blend water to make sure we can keep up with demand. Using more than one source means our water resources are secure, and we're prepared for the future.
I'd have understood the OP much quicker if he'd used the word descaled... or I still don't understand what he'd talking about and rescaled is the correct term? :p
