Hoping the STW Greatminds can help here as I'm at a loss.

I'm getting frequent kernel panics on my MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016). Some times it happens every 10 mins or so several times then nothing for a few hours, sometimes there is a gap of a few hours between each crash.

I've run Rember which shows no RAM errors.
I've reset NVRAM
I've turned off the power nap settings which some websites suggest could be the issue.
I've checked the disk utility which shows no errors and nothing to repair.

A crash report suggests that Dashlane was open at one crash - I've exited that (but not uninstalled it) and uninstalled it on Chrome as well.

The latest crash log shows the below - is there anything in this that is the cause?

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801f77ecde): nvme: "Fatal error occurred. What os are you using? I’ve seen people having issues with big sur.

Otherwise the macrumours forum has solved most issues I’ve had

It suddenly started doing this on Monday when I was on Catalina so I updated to Big Sur hoping it would fix it - which it hasnt.

Cheers - I'll post on macrumours as well.

If I'm reading that backtrace correctly the NVME (storage) driver is crashing.

Get the disk tested with something more thorough than Disk Utility.

Thanks retro83

What would you suggest using?

Tech Tool Pro is my go to disk utility, it's available as an expensive download (more than £50). Be prepared for a wait as it does its stuff though as a surface scan can take an good time if the disk is large capacity.

Sorry I've been out of the Mac game for a while, so I'm not sure. Happy to defer to Sandwich's knowledge on that.

One thing you can do is Disk Utility, select the your boot volume and click the info icon, then post the screenshot. Hopefully it shows the full SMART info, it may not though.
Onyx used to be able to show this, not sure if it still can.

Thanks Sandwich - I had already found that before you posted and have run all the tests (all passed) except the surface scan which can't be done from my Macbook - I'm not really understanding the edrive thing that it includes? I'm looking at the tools selection and it doesnt give me the option to create an edrive

@retro83 - thank you. Onyx doesnt work with Big Sur (yet) but I have tried Disk Utility several times and it passes everything. It doesnt have SMART status apparently but is fully verified

Have you got an external drive you can clone the system onto and boot from? That will tell you if its a hardware issue with your internal drive.

@sandwich - I've now run a full surface scan by booting from an external hard drive and it says that there are no errors on my internal drive.

It's not crashed yet though running from the external hard (its extremely slow though) which suggests that it is the internal hard drive? Despite there being no errors?

The slow running will be down to the USB bus speed and possibly a logic board fault. Your external disc needs to be USB3 for best results.
Do have a check that there isn’t a recall on your model that needs a visit to your local Genius Bar. If you time it right it can be a while you wait process.

Thanks @Sandwich Its def the internal drive as I rebooted this morning using that and it crashed after an hour - but ran for hours last night on the external.

There appear to be well known issues with the logic board mine has but no recalls that I can find.

Am I screwed then? The only way to fix it is to replace the whole logic board as its all soldered on?

@vanilla83 If the logic board has died then it's usually cheaper to buy a new machine! Apple spares are not cheap.

May be worth an approach to Apple under Consumer Rights Act as there's a documented fault as evidenced by feedback. A 4 year old machine shouldn't be dying in this manner.

This from the UK support website may help:

There's no charge if the issue is covered under warranty, AppleCare+ or consumer law. If your issue isn’t covered, the price depends on the type of repair. Ask your service representative for an estimate.

Good luck

I wouldn't go in all guns blazing at first, but you should obviously know your rights. I had a genius authorise an out of warranty logic board replacement for me a few years back. She put it though under a known video card issue but the symptoms were definitely not what I was experiencing. I assume she was being nice rather than incompetent, but didn't ask too many questions!

In the days of third parties doing repairs I also had logic board replacement in a powerbook that had had an unfortunate run in with a bottle of beer. That was fixed under warranty despite the smell of beer, I guess it didn't make any difference to the third party whether they billed me or Apple!

Apple replaced the motherboard in my laptop out of warranty but less than 6 years old, without much pressure, under consumer law. I’d taken it to Stormfront (my local re-seller) and they sorted it with apple- I was amazed and chuffed).

Earlier machine and thus was a few years ago. Good luck!

Thanks for all the help!

I've been online/on the phone with Apple support today. Trying a completely fresh OSX install tonight (not holding breath). They've given me direct line to their senior team and seem to be trying to help fully so far.

Maybe caused by kexts on your system? Developers were supposed to move to system extensions instead of kexts, announced back with Catalina.
Try in Terminal: kextstat | grep -v com.apple
This'll show you which ones are there. Try uninstalling the related software & see if that helps.
Cheers
