We are thinking of doing a three week backpacking trip.
Probably flying in to Kochi.
Anyone been to that area ?
What highlights would you reccomend ?
It'll be an unsupported trip using local transport - old school - might be a shock to us 50 somethings !
Yes I have been there. Local transport is great* - travel by train overnight sleeper.
Kerala backwaters are great for taking a boat trip on - beautiful.
.
.
.
* an 'experience' like everything in India - including most probably, any privately chartered transport
Yes, Mrs M & I did the same sort of thing for 2 weeks, for my 60th, & had a great time.
Check the climate for when you plan to go, the rainy season might be unpleasant.
If you want I can email you our itinerary. I'd say to avoid the rice boat trips on the backwaters, the main routes are like diesel-polluted highways with modern airconditioned tourist boats belching noise & fumes.
We also flew to Cochi, then travelled by bus, taxi & train. Don't hire a car!
Been twice, many years ago thou. Lighthouse beach was chilled out the first time but when we went back another year the big hotel companies had moved in and had changed the feel of it. Not sure what it is like now.
Do a rice boat trip in the backwaters in Cochin, The tea plantations are worth a visit.
Befriend a tuc tuc and a taxi driver and sort out everything through them. They will take you to the good places cheaply.
Take a train journey to Tamil Nadu 'Lands end'. . and explore the back streets and restaurants, We had no issues with the street food.
thanks all,
must start doing some serious research
Yes. It is awesome.

great link CTM - thx - that does look really good.
I had seen MTB-kerala & had said to MrsMcMad - do you mind if I pop off for a few days ! - that went down surprisingly well
But possibly in retaliation she has thrown in a major curve ball - & said how about Laos instead.
