I don't normally do instant coffee. But this stuff seems acceptable; better than the filter coffee at work.

I bought the same stuff to take to work instead of the supplied tesco own brand, really nice coffee I was quite surprised.

Anything like the Starbucks version?

it looks the same type of thing as starbucks via. micro ground beans PLUS instant granules. Ive been using Via at work for a while for a drinakble coffee. But ist very expensive stuff (30p a cup or so) I assume this stuff works out a fair bit cheaper?

Must try it.

While it's on offer at Tesco, it works out about the same price (per 100g) as a decent instant.

I'm finding it leaves a powdery residue like mdf sawdust, it's like it's not totally water soluble or something, so if I drink the cup to the bottom the last gulp's foul. The basic taste's OK apart from that.

Nothing like as good as the Nescafe pretentious instant range- alta rica, cap columbie etc, all of which apart from the terrible espresso are pretty decent IMO.

"I'm finding it leaves a powdery residue"

Yeah I noticed that, but then filter normally leaves some crap at the bottom so I'm used to not draining the cup. I think I tried the alta rica and thought it OK.

mrmo: How is it millicano made, and in what way is this different from usual coffee granuals?

Funny I just impulse purchased this (coffee machine being repaired).

It tastes alright then? Been on instant for last week or so....

It's made with micro ground coffee mixed with instant. The micro ground adds a "cafetiere" style taste and kind of remains in suspension but yes, will leave a residue in the bottom of the mug. Just bought a can myself to give it a go. Half price at Sainsburys at the mo.

my wife just got some.

I don't drink instant but she says she thinks it's a bit weak - was dissapointed as she likes the Starbucks one.

the Starbucks one.

The starbucks one is bleedin' expensive (but yes, as instant goes, it's nice) though! I didn't think the Kenco one would be as nice but haven't tried it yet.

That Kenco stuff is rank, I fell for the Tesco half price offer and bought some. It's nothing like filter/real/non-instant coffee and IMO doesn't taste as nice as many instants (much prefer Alta Rica for example). And yeah it leaves powdery crap in the bottom of the cup.

I like it, much better than instant, which tastes awful without milk. Not as god as proper filter coffee, but not that far off

If I'm not at home (or in a pub) I drink water. Better tasting, cheaper and healthier.

So can I home-make something similar by mixing Kenco freeze-dried granules with a small proportion of espresso grinds?

I think it would need to be even finer than espresso grind...hence the term "micro-ground" i.e. so fine that it almost dissolves. Could be wrong though.

Anyway, just having a mug. It's not too bad - for £1.99 anyway...though I think I'd need a couple of teaspoons in a mug to make it a bit stronger. Certainly nicer than instant. I think Starbucks Via shades it though (and would want to for the money). Good coffee for camping.

I don't normally find it necessary to refute calumnies against me but buzz - you've gone to far this time and besmirched my integrity.

If you read what I wrote it's quite clear that the "not" applies to "in a pub".

The very idea! 😀

The Starbucks one rings of a bit of a marketing con to me - they say they won't do jars as the taste won't be 'fresh' enough.

Of course that, and the fact it is easier to charge astronomical prices for individual sachets.

Pity because I tried some free samples and quite liked it but there is no way I would spend that sort of money buying instant coffee.

Yeah, I thought that too. I bought a couple of boxes for my kayaking trip last year - 4 days when we had to carry all our stuff with us and camp every night. It was a lifesaver for that though - much less faff than grounds and a maker. But can't disagree it's priced stupidly.

You want an electric espresso pot. Like the stove top ones but plug in. Awesome inventions for numbing the dullness of work. Also plebs get confused by them and steer clear!

Still - it's not as expensive as saffron

Tesco Saffron
£3.50 (£700.00/100g)

😆

Is there anything more expensive per weight than saffron (in Tesco obviously)?

MF - I see small cans of Starbucks at Tescos. Still effing expensive though.

Ahh right - they didn't do them when it first came out and I recall them saying they wouldn't.

Picked up a can of this stuff for a quid in $supermarket the other day.

Tried it once, seemed weak. I'll need to put more Stuff (technical term) in next time I make a brew. From the first attempt I'm thinking I can get the same results by mixing Nescafé 2:1 with gravel, but in fairness I was camping at the time so it's probably not the most representative of brews.

Kenco Millicano is £1.99 at Sainsbury's at the moment, or £1.69 if you get the refill pack.

Worth a punt I reckon.

That Millicano is far more "effective" than normal instant coffee.. Had my usual 4 or 5 mugs in a row and buzzing slightly now 😀

Certainly worth a punt for those prices. Not sure how I'll feel about it when it goes back up to £4.00. As I said before, a handy coffee to bring to work or camping if the only other alternatives are shitty instant.
