Morning all,

Recently moved to the area and looking for somewhere to go Kayaking in the evening whilst the weather is so nice.

Has anyone much experience with Kayaking on the Wye/Lugg or anywhere else local to Hereford that can shed any insight into decent stretches and good dropping off/pickup points?

Cheers,

P

The bit around Symonds Yat is popular with the rental boats. Plenty of places to put in and get out along that stretch and its very scenic

Yep. Did that some years ago. Not too extreme. Remember to head for the 'non-frothy' bit in the middle when you get to the rapids if you don't want to overturn the rig and watch your barrel of belongings go floating off in the direction of Chepstow... 😳

The Wye is unusual in that it has a historic right of navigation (but not access), which is one of the reasons it is so popular for canoeing. Most rivers don't. Don't know about the Lugg, but probably not. Generally on rivers you can't just turn up and launch.

Try that on the Ribble.... the huntin' shootin' fishin' brigade will torpedo you.

The salmon anglers on the Wye aren't too happy either but they can't do much about it.

Lots of rivers you can get access through clubs etc. but these days with the popularity of inflatable and sit-on boats a lot of people buy one and just think you can go where you want.

It looks like the situation above Hay-on-Wye is not so clear after all:

I follow Kenny on Instagram, seems a top chap, not sure if he's on here (think he probably is and that's maybe how I came to follow him), but is into his bikes. Anyhow, he's your man for transport and canoeing knoweldge in the area: http://www.kennystaxis.com/
