I'm just not hearing it. Am I the one that's out of step?

I rather like her, good production, interesting lyrics although it took me a while to appreciate her delivery. Much better than a lot of the dreary indie stuff 6Music peddles.

I'm a big fan of spoken word, slam poetry and the like, but you have to remember when listening to R6 that it's just a trendy pop thing, a sales vehicle for the music industry..

Like NME, it's a tool for programming snooty idiots so that they part with their money in a controlled manner to create the desired outcome

Kate's the popular face of modern poetry and that's a great thing IMO

She's great. Maybe you're taste is just a bit shit. That's usually the issue, and snobbishness....

Well, I have excellent taste NBITF, and I'm not a snob, so....

By the way: its "your", not "you're".

Not hearing it still. I think its the fact that its devoid of melody- maybe I should be listening to it in the same way I'd listening to Gil Scott Heron? As a bit of poetry, rather than a 'song'?

Not someone I could listen to an album of, but occasionally nice to listen to as something different. Wouldn't call it rubbish though.

Erm. Having developed an onion in around 2 songs worth - I like the lyrics, but am not a fan of the delivery.....

I could tolerate an odd song now & again, but not for continuous listening; 3rd song in & ready to find something else......

So what, exactly do you suggest as an alternative, then?
NME doesn't even exist in any form that's important now, certainly not in any way that could reasonably be expected to have any influence on sales, and your remark: "Like NME, it's a tool for programming snooty idiots so that they part with their money in a controlled manner to create the desired outcome" shows a fair degree of inverse snobbery all of its own.
I think you'll find that the average age of the 6Music audience makes them far less susceptible to influence than your average fourteen year old.
I like Kate Tempest, I also like Courtney Barnett, who has a similar way with words. Both I discovered via 6Music, not because I'm a programmed snooty idiot, I've been perfectly capable of making my own mind up about what I like for the last fifty-odd years, 6Music is just one, fairly recent, vehicle; Q Magazine, The Word, Uncut Magazine, gigs, other friends record collections...
A great many artists I've been introduced to by 6Music have never become big names, but at least some of them manage to make a living as a result of the interest paid by the presenters on 6, many of whom are musicians in their own right, or used to be, which give them far more credence that those on other stations, who are far more interested in self-promotion than promoting the careers of others.
Kate Tempest, whether you like her or not, is worth a dozen Rhianna's, I mean, have you heard the mindless drivel that's her latest effort?
Christ, it's dire, yet it's Ms Tempest who's being called shite!
And the only reason I can actually refer to such childish trash is because I was forced to listen to Radio 1 this morning.

You want proper music snobbery? Only listen to albums recommended by Pitchfork. You'll have a pretty shite collection, but lots of hipster cool points. I'm off to find this lady on Deezer now, if she's anything like Courtney Barnett she'll be great.

Courtney Barnett is a great recommendation! Thanks chaps. 🙂

Hollie McNish is worth a listen too. She does a wonderful thing about how she isn't Kate Tempest.

(my second album title, I think - after "you and you'res")

My view - she's kind of grime, spoken word stuff. Seen her live and all I thought was, pleasant, but there are thousands of better black artists out there.
She's jumped adopted a black music format, (just like Eminem did with rap) and made it acceptable for 6Music listeners.
Give me someone like Sims any day.

Oi, nobraininthehead, who gave you permission to swap letters round?
Not seeking attention - or accusing anyone of racism! just something I've noticed in a particular posters musical tastes... hmmm.
He started it anyway - the thread was about Kate Tempest, and he uses it to say how much he dislikes Rhianna??

Anyway - thanks OP - just used some Amazon credits to download last album ( the quid you get if you have prime but settle for a slower delivery...)

Kate T is an acquired taste.

I have been really impressed by her when watching her doing spoken word stuff, but not loved the songs as much.

She's got something to say and isn't ashamed to be herself, so for the music world she's at least not another pre-packaged pop starlet.

I like her. Personally I wouldn't have compared her to Courtney Barnett, to me KT feels like poetry set to music whereas CB writes fully formed songs. I like both but KT can use the music to be deliberately jarring and uncomfortable if the words require it and that doesn't always make for easy listening.

She also does a lot more than just music, If you've got (and enjoyed) the last Kate tempest album she also wrote a companion novel that follows the same story arc as the album.
