I've always used Quickstep in the past but Karndean Click LVT has come on my radar and their lower end isn't that much more than higher end Quickstep.
The thing I can't get over though is the Karndean rigid is only 5mm thick and they say you don't need any sort of underlay, even with 8-10mm Quickstep an underlay was required.
Just wondered if anyone had fitted Karndean themselves and wether they used an underlay.
I'd be fitting over floorboards which are pretty much fine. A few miss-matched ones here and there where a new board has been put in when doing plumbing work.
Ta!
Just looking into this ourselves with a whole new downstairs of a house to floor in LVT or similar....We looked at engineered wood, but the doors will need skelfing to clear them....and they are going to cost more to fit. So we are going LVT despite me objecting to 'plastic crap' at first.
We have had a good look - seems that there are some well known brands such as Karndean and Amtico, but that they are often as much marketing as quality. We have had strong recommendations for Polyflor and (the better range) Moduleo which are noticeably cheaper but apparently just as good, and two shops claiming even better if you match the price level. All the ones we are looking at have underlay attached to the bottom already - so no underlay needed.
In addition as we have new concrete slab which *should* be vaguely level, that the difference between glue down and 'click' is really modest. Glue down costs more to install and will require 24hrs to put down a properly smooth screed. Click *could* be more prone to movement, but laid as a floating floor on a new slab is apparently just fine.- We will have the shop visit the new house in a week - they will then confirm if the slab is smooth enough (house is 95% built).
All the shops have said that the fitting is as, if not more, important than the quality of floor.
We have local shop with a nice one we like as a cancelled order of nice Moduleo which we have been offered at a very good price. I think that is what we will go with.
I put a Karndean LVT click floor down last September. The room was floorboards but I overboarded it with 5mm ply just to iron out the creases and lumps. It was very easy to fit. I’ve previously done a glued Karmdean which admittedly is still down 20 years later but was a right mess with glue getting everywhere. But that have been more to my first attempt technique.
Overboarding with ply is a good solution if boards are uneven as the tongue and groove part can split over time if there’s too much movement/difference in heights.
Having said that, it f I’ve gone to the trouble of overlaying with ply, I may as well do the job properly and feather the joints then use glue down LVT, as you’ve done the hard part.
Just started installing this this weekend - and wow, it is so easy to install!
I was sceptical about being able to score and snap, but it really is that simple. A couple of scores with a stanley blade and it snaps easily. Takes seconds compared with having to saw every cut.
And the clicking together is easy too, nothing has to be forced.
Not going back to Quickstep after using this. The extra cost is well worth it (and there's not that much difference as I've not had to buy underlay).
