Can I use a water based varnish on this? The supplier recommended 3 coats of Rustins which is high solvent and will stink the place out.
A friend has used Bona Mega on his floorboards and has had good results.
Will my floor die using the Bona?

No, although you should use a "thinner" polyurethane sealer as a base coat. Which you then "knock" back with fine sandpaper. Before your two (or three if you want) coats of Bona Mega. Using Mega as the base coat alone can lead to problems with lacquer adhesion. Use thin pile roller sleeves (get a decent quality one from screwfix) and an extendable pole of you have one. You'll get a better finish standing up than on you knees. Quick rinse and store in water between coats. Chuck when finished.

The floor is finished, but her ladyship wants it even more finished.
It is getting scratched up quite quickly.

Oh right, if it's already finished, I withdraw all above advice. What's it been finished with previously?

Can you even varnish something that's been oiled? I thought it was one or the other?
