I'm heading up the M11 towards Stansted and saw, coming the opposite way, first of all a load of police outriders on motorbikes, then, about 15 black SUV American jobbies with lights going, ragging it down the outside lane......then it dawned on me that Obama is in town........had to be, didn't it?

Was once stopped on the A40 by Northolt by loads of flashing lights, big limo comes flying up from London straight across the junction and onto the airfield. Drives up to a Lear jet, two people in back of limo jump out and straight up steps of jet, Jet is rolling before the door is closed and is airborne before the traffic starts to move. No idea who it was but they were in a real hurry.

This is a good 35 years ago and was quite impressive.

Which one of these is the euphemism?

You would think that being such important people they wouldn't need to rush everywhere. Surely they have enough authority to make their calendars actually work?

Watching Cameron or Prince Charles get around London is always impressive I think.

Three Range Rovers, six police motorcylists shutting down junctions on a rolling basis so they can speed through.

According to some rag or other, the SAS are using those Ospreys to deploy anti-terror squads now...

Once saw a Convoy of various police motor cycles and cars followed by several Military trucks then a couple of very armored looking military trucks trailed by a couple of fire / rescue vehicles and a couple of ambulances followed by more military trucks and finished off with yet more police. Must have been minimum of 20 vehicles.

Always wondered what they were transporting that required military and all three emergency services. Radioactive materials / nukes perhaps?

It was the Queen Mum having a strop I reckon.

Terror she was when she lost her rag, by all accounts.

It won't be Obama - he doesn't arrive until Thursday. Might have been a rehearsal though.

That would be the nukes convoy. I've seen them a couple of times, once on the Edinburgh bypass, the other going round near to Stirling Castle - both times with the rolling road block, and with the trucks pelting along at a fair pace!

Once saw a convoy of blacked out T5's, escorted by unmarked and marked cars on the north york moors, someone suggested it was a dummy run for the olympic torch, but it seemed a little OTT.

He's not allowed into Heathrow...

Which begs the question, why don't they all arrive at RAF bases?

Yet can be foiled by a pensioner on a pedestrian crossing 😀

It's the "what do I do now, Sarge?" look on that copper's face that makes it perfect.

Stansted is also near practically all the US military in the UK too, not to mention the Army Air Corps Apaches and various RAF bases.

They're all in the middle of nowhere with duff road links - much easier to hold up a convoy. Stansted is on a Motorway, so safer for a convoy (eg good CCTV coverage).

I got pulled over once by one of these convoys, I mean pulled over to the hard shoulder.
I've no idea who was in the cars but they were blasting down the M11 at at least 120mph. When I questioned why they were travelling so fast near the exit for the M25 I was told it was none of my business and I would be charged for obstruction. So I questioned again why, this time his face went purple but I just shrugged and again asked on what grounds could I be charged??

Mrs came out of Rose Lane, Oxford (by the Botanic Garden for those that know the city) on her Brompton. Joined a convoy of m/c's and rollers in the middle and was surprised to see Liz & Phil the Greek looking out at her. Waved over at the bottom of Longwall Street by an irate copper.

I've seen a similar convoy to one_happy_hippy about 15 years ago down the A45. Pretty impressive, they weren't going to stop for nothing with police shutting a big busy roundabout off so they could go straight on.

Similar convoy in Oxford back in early 2004-ish. Came from Woodstock Road to Wolvercoate roundabout, outriders stopped traffic to allow black convoy to whizz round before heading off along the A40 Northern Bypass.

Made a nice change to the morning routine.

Saw the same on the A1M last year. Turned out it was this...

Seen one of them there whirlyplaneamajigs over our house last week, wondered what it was all about.

US Marines use them in the States, there are two stationed over here for the use of US Special Forces, for rapid deployment into Europe; at a top speed of 350 kts, they're faster than a hekilopter, carry 24 troops, and have a max ceiling of 24,000', so out of the range of ground fire.
British Special Forces were working with the yanks on Salisbury Plain several weeks ago on exercises with the Osprey, then it was reported that the SAS would be getting them to replace their Chinooks.
They were cruising around Chippenham at the time, but I didn't get to see them, sadly; I think they're amazing planes.
