Wasn't expecting that. My train pulled into a station and while we're waiting to pull away I saw it all happen.
I didn't think seagulls killed stuff. I thought they just scavenged ?

It was Putney train station so I'm not sure if they have some super organic dietary requirements.

Seagulls will eat just about anything. There was a story in the papers recently of one taking a Chihuahua puppy.

During the migration of birds from Africa to Spain, seagulls will sometimes drown vultures. They line up in squadron formation and dive bomb a wing from above. Auto-shitting as they go. The idea is to tip the vulture over so it falls into the sea. Once in the sea it cannot take off again and so drowns.

Doh ! Seagulls kill fish. Pretty aggressive birds. FWIW we saw a duck kill another duck, not to eat it was about asserting dominance.

I had an ill seagull in my garden. His mate sat on the roof looking after him which I thought was nice.
Coming home 2 hours later the guardian seagull is trying to rip the throat out of the poorly one. (No he wasn't trying to have sex)
So bashed him with a broom and took poorly seagull to bird sanctuary.
This was shortly after I moved to the coast and with hindsight should have beaten them both to death with a spade.

My folks and I once took an injured seagull to the RSPB.

They were really unimpressed.

Clearly not too many people watch nature programmes, then. Couldn't count how many times over the years I've seen footage of seagulls taking and killing other birds, often pretty big ones. Skuas are vicious killers, and will attack just about anything, they'll happily go after humans, although that's just to drive them away. I was watching something on Springwatch recently about the skuas up on Orkney, IIRC, and I'm pretty sure they were going after eagles.
Found a photo of a gull having a go at a sea eagle, but that's more about protecting food access, they're still bloody aggressive, though.

It's not just seagulls, there's footage of a pelican scooping up a pigeon and swallowing it, I think in Hyde Park in London.
St James's Park, actually. Sorry if you're eating your tea...

They're bloody aggressive most of the time, especially around nesting season. They regularly dive bomb people, although admittedly not to eat them. I hope.

There's balance in all things though - per CountZero, today I saw a pair of Skuas taking out a gull. attacked it, took it down to water level and ripped it to pieces. Do you need some Skuas in that there London?
