Hi!

I just joined the forum as a paid member after pulling the trigger on a new bike (new to me anyway) last week, so I thought it's only right to say hello.

Native to Sheffield, but for the moment living and working abroad in southern Germany (Konstanz), so all being well I'll be heading into the nearby alps for some days riding when the weather gets just a little more accommodating and my skills are a little better on a MTB.  Oh, and Ive also got to collect my bike from Sheffield too ...

For the next few weeks I'll be staying a little more local on the old bike getting in some miles kilometres   :0)

- Andy

There are some classic threads you need to read to get a feel for the place...

Picolax and Ling's would be a could place to start, but there is probably a top 10 somewhere

Sudocat for lols and Bullheart for, not sure what for, general tragic epicness.

Welcome to the forum. Its better than Google for finding out most things, except Google is better for finding anything on the forum. I hope that makes sense.

Haha what a welcome!  Thank you ... judging by the comments, I think ive found a place thats just the ticket ...

Just working through the Picolax thread ... needed to take a break to let the tears disperse!

Ill try my best to accommodate the Q's so far ...

Here's my new ride - sadly not my garden (it was the sellers!) - feel free to critique as required 😉

- Clearly I'll be on flats, used to clips on the road, but with my limited off road skills, not for me at the moment!

- Im not too bad on the road, but my MTB exploits will be purely for enjoyment and exploring.

- Non E-biker for the moment, although they're unbelievably popular here and i may get tempted at some point...

- Oxford comma ...  I'll let you know

0bb4461f-467e-4c0e-a758-c82d11b26946

@susepic - I'm just in Salem, I often ride through Unter Uhldingen on the way to work in the 'off season.' As lively as ever in winter... 😅

If all goes according to plan I should be out for my first off road ride this coming weekend on a local loop on the old bike, albeit wearing roadie kit 🤦‍♂️

Thanks for the welcome all!

Here’s my new ride

Reading back I think you'll find that nobody actually asked what your new bike was 🤣

Anyway, I'm tempted to make a comment about how similar the bike looks to the old chair frame in the background, but I won't 😉

Fake grass. Cheater.

...Welcome! Good luck.

Tyre logos lined up with the valves. A good start!

Clearly I’ll be on flats

Not that clearly. I think they've fallen off.

Ah... Bodensee. Fond memories....

Got chased in Konstanz by the Polizei after we jumped onto a train by crossing the tracks.... Train went nowhere and then the announcement that the police were on their way. We legged it and made it onto the catamaran and slumped down, the police outside and the boat pulled away. Fun times.

Bodensee is tough in winter!

Yep fully paid up member ... 😎

Good point re the pedals ... that reminds me I will have to buy some!

I was told the bike is a '23 Alpine 160 Evo, its an ex display model and got it cheap as a result. As an ex garden gate Orange Five owner from way back when, I just fancied something different from whats readily available over here. Im hoping it should be good for some alps days out as well some more local XC loops.

Sadly no van at the moment - standard 3-series touring for me (company car), although the father in law has a pretty smart G-wagon/explorer truck we sometimes borrow for camping hols.

Work: ex forces for 15+ years, now in consulting (dare i say, in I.T ... 😱)

As for the Bodensee, yep winter is not the best - definitely looking forward to spring as most folks are.

@alpin - they are still the same 😅 and your getaway vehicle is still in use in summer!

Quiet in the winter, but Vorarlberg just a couple of hours for days trips skiing helped the time go by

As for the Bodensee, yep winter is not the best

Some pretty wicked storms in summer too sometimes. was in Bregenz once, eating pizza outside, and the waiters literally take your plate way from you while you are dining and tell you to go inside immediately, so they can take down the canopies and make the terrace safe. The 10 min later there are canopies flying down the street from other bars. Must be proper scary out on the water if you don't get back to shore in time.

used to work in Friedrichshafen (well Immenstaad I spose really)

Thanks again for the warm reception - that's really nice! (And appreciated!)

Yep, the summer storms are impressive here ... Immenstaad -  Ive a couple of mates that work there at A'bus, in fact most of the Brits here work there thinking about it 😅

Just for clarity ...

- I was deployed oversees at the start of my career, but nothing remarkable, back safely albeit with a greater appreciation of a lot of things, not the least being civvy work.

- As nice as this area is now, the first couple of years when I moved here were horrendous (both mentally and physically) and to this day there are aspects that I'll never get used to, hence Im trying to enjoy the benefits of the area whilst I can ...

- Always useful to have a Psychiatrist service to hand ... appreciated 😉

- As for 'Louise' ... that's got me curious! 😅

As for ‘Louise’ … that’s got me curious! 😅

If memory serves it was an epic tale of failed romance and metaphorically (at least) boiled rabbit.

No doubt for completeness you will need to familiarise yourself with the use of frozen sausages as a lawn decoration and various other oddities spawned by some of the odder and older threads on here.

Every time this happens I wonder whether I should write some sort of welcome pack. But then I realise even I don’t know the origins of everything.

I recently became aware of the consequences of lawn sausages (but not the source), and I’ve yet to get to the bottom of baby robins.

Welcome @andytri 🙂

Must be proper scary out on the water if you don’t get back to shore in time.

Lived in Lindau for a while.

I remember riding back from Bregenz (Pfänder!) one day and you could see big clouds descending down Säntis. Within minutes there were 1.5m waves topping the wall, an alarm started sounding. We were trapped out in the open... Hid behind some shed, didn't fancy standing under a tree.

Used to enjoy watching the storms over the alps whilst sitting on the north shore with a Meckatzer beer.

Haha, I see I have a lot of catching up to do on this forum … I’m sure I’ll be able to contribute accordingly!

Sadly, I don’t own a pizza oven, I might be struggling with the size of our balcony at the moment. However, never knowingly outdone: we do have an Italian restaurant on the ground floor of our apartment block, which serves up some pretty special pizza. Surely, that has to count for something?? ;0)

@alpin - Lindau is stunning, your lucky to have lived there previously, fair play. Info duly noted re the Pfänder, sounds pretty grim. I did the same in Meersburg a couple of weeks ago, sat and watched a storm roll over the alps in the direction of the lake. I should post up some pics at some point.

Ive a couple of mates that work there at A’bus,

It was still called Dornier when I worked there. Eventually ended up back in Germany (but much further from the Alps).
Ridden (and hiked) up Pfänder a few times. Disappointed not to see any marmots in the zoo there.

Pfänder, sounds pretty grim.

Nah, not grim.... Just that one day.

In fact in winter it was one of the best places to be.... Up above the graue Suppe. Used to ride up and just sit there for hours in the sun before descending back into the gloom.

Some great trails there, but it's a fair trek from the other end of the lake.
