I want one 🙂

This one to be exact - pretty cool and efficient as far as I can see. It would do all I would want a laptop to do without the extra weight/price/eventual slowness.
If I had the money I'd get one each for my girls to do their homework and general [s]browsing[/s] playing web games.
We have an iPad but typing on it is annoying sometimes and this might be better.
I must be a complete Google fanboi 😉

Bought a nexus7. Love it and now want a chromebook.
As a total apple fanboi I feel a bit dirty just for thinking that.

I'm waiting for the HP 14" one to come out - hopefully soon. Shame that the 11" ones' chargers blew up (OK, a few overheated but they have been withdrawn from sale).

hmmm thanks for the tip off

Pretty cheesed off actually - I have bought my daughter one of these for Xmas. Despite buying it direct from HP they have not contacted me to let me know about the problem. Looks like I need to buy a new charger for it

eddie - I was previously a Microsoft devotee
Now we have 2x chromebooks, a nexus 7, a nexus 4 and when theyre back in stock I will get a nexus 5 and pass the 4 on to Mrs S.

We set up a new company this year and all our productivity stuff is run in google so everyone in the team has a chromebook, but can continue to use their own hardware if they want because Chome browser is essentially cheombook.

it's brilliant. And with the recent integration of quickoffice by google since they bought it, it gets better and better.

Tim - I think that if it hasn't cooked already, you're probably OK - it's not an inherent problem in all of them as I understand it.

EDIT - I guess that as it's for Xmas, you haven't used it yet...

I got an HP Chromebook 11 when they first came out and am very pleased with it so far.

A lot faster and nicer than the Netbook it replaces, especially the speed of start up and silence of it running. Does everything I need which is pretty much accessing the web from the sofa and writing emails - certainly nice having a proper keyboard and the ability to angle the screen unlike a tablet.

Charger certainly gets rather warm, but I'm still using it 🙂

PSA the Samsung series 3 is still available for £170 from
http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/product_detail/14406/Samsung-Chromebook-Series-3-11-6-LED-2GB-16GB-Netbook/

grade A refurb.

I PSA'd it the other day, here's a link to the original thread
http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/psa-samsung-chromebook-bargin

I'd avoid the Acer C7 - HDD, fat, slow, bad battery.
Not a patch on the SSD/Dual Core 9hr Samsung.

£178 after cashback

Stoner, this is the new C7 and it's waaay better than the old one according to the review I linked to above. 4Gb Ram, 16Gb SSD and 9hr battery life (double the old model).
Although it may not have a couple of things the HP 11 has, it's considerably quicker and cheaper too.

yep, saw that SB. Just making sure no one wanders off to google play store devices and sees the C7 still in stock and makes the mistake....

Isn't the fundamental problem that you need an internet connection to do anything ? That machine in the link has 16gb storage, most iPad users would go for 32 or 64 (or more). With iPad you can edit/markup documents offline then sync to iCloud when you need to. Agreed iPad keyboard leaves a little to be desired but even with my fat fingers and dodgy eyesight I can use it quickly in landscape mode. I have a wireless keyboard but I never use it with the iPad

Same with a Chromebook - do as much work offline as you want and as soon as you're connected to the internet it uploads to Google Drive. So no, not a problem in the slightest.
Plus obviously you can access and edit your files from anything with a browser. I just freaked one of my daughters out by editing her homework with my phone while she was still typing it!
Yes, only 16Gb SSD but you can always slap a in USB stick/HD or SD card and add loads more storage - anyway it's all about online storage now.

as SB says. Chromebook has a google drive offline sync capability.
ALso offline chrome apps (such as gmail offline) run when offline and sync in the background so are uptodate between network connections.

The other way to think of it though is how often are users away from networks? Even when I travel on the train I simply tether my phone to maintain regular network links. At home it's not an issue, nor in the office.

The only problem Ive had is in a clients office where the guest WiFi makes a mess of site certificates and google wont recognise them for security reasons, so I just use my 3G network.

Yes there are going to be occasions where you have to be a bit more resourceful and plan ahead. But the benefits of having constant cloud backups, collaborative access to documents, seamless access to files across platforms (whether my Nexus 7, Nexus 4, local PC, internet cafe PC, chromebook, mates computer or even god forbid and Apple mac thingy) wherever I am far outweighs the odd offline issue.
