Through the door last night was one of those planning application letter things. I live in a typical edge-of-city suburb of modern housing estates, handy for the motorway you know the type - every city has them. They are looking for planning permission to build another 1,000 ish houses adjacent to the area - here's the news story:

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/cardiff-housing-estate-plan-unveiled-2582892

And here's the land currently (sorry don't know how to link to Google Streetview directly):

What do people think? It seems controversial, but then these things always are. Personally I can't object, but it's interesting to see how countryside becomes city. I've been looking at old maps and topography, to see if I can see how Cardiff became the way it is today, and to see if I can visualise how things used to be, and this is a good chance to see this in action.

Yes some countryside will be lost, but most of us live on what used to be countryside don't we? And big as it is, it's hardly going to make a dent in even this relatively small pocket of countryside.

what cracks me up is when they load all these new housing estates in without thinking about other infrastructure.

on my route cycling home i go through a flood plain that has had an application lodged for 550 houses - the road is currently at breaking point most of the winter already- (north deeside road for anyone that knows - between cults and miltimber)

550 houses. at least 500 more cars - if not 1000! all trying to use the same single road into town.

im just glad that when i drive to work from mine i can take the farm track and come out miles and miles from the traffic.

Well in this case I think they have it covered. The main entry will be off that big roundabout to the west, and the lane that you would currently use to access it will be blocked for cars and turned into a cycleway. I'd be a bit concerned about living down by the river, but to be fair I've never seen it flood there.

Hmm, having searched though, it looks like most of the flooding happens on the other side of the river - some defence work might be required.

I'd have said that was a good place for a new estate. It's bounded by 3 pretty major roads so it's not exactly a rural idyll, should also have reasonable transport links. Pinching a bit of flood plain would be an issue, though

Yep. Lots of new housing going in round here as a result of the latest local plans. The roads are already severely overloaded between here and the motorway. So when they decide where to put the largest developments, you'd think they'd put them where they has easy access to the motorway? They wouldn't put them where all traffic will have to use the already overloaded road would they?
