PS4 dulux edition is about 14 quids on the PSN at the moment
im considering it
/thinks....
Bloody hell £13.49 for the delux that’s a great price.
Matt or gloss?
And I've hardly played since I started this thread.. busy with work 🙂
Right; I’ve secured a year of PS plus for £38 and Elite deluxe for £13.49. Downloaded today. I’ll be logging on for the first time on Monday; any absolute nooby hints and tips going?
🚀
Yup. Play the handy tutorial mission it’ll help you out with flying.
Do the tutorials yes. Also try the advanced ones. There's a lot to remember at first but don't lose heart, it doesn't take that long to begin to understand it all.
Read up on the major factions - Alliance, Federation and Empire - you can do this on the web. Once you can navigate and fight, pick a star system as a base (preferably aligned with a faction you like and that's experiencing a boom) and visit the systems around it - preferably of different economy types e.g. industrial, refinery, agricultural etc, cos they sell different stuff. Once you've visited a system you have access to its market data, so when you are buying stuff you can find a good place to sell it (by choosing that commodity to display) or if you do a mission that requires it you can find it. The galaxy map is incredibly powerful but a bit of a bastard to use. It only shows you systems on or near a particular plane; you can move the plane up and down by pressing the bottom left or right of the touchpad.
If you've bought the game online you don't get a manual but there is a big fat PDF manual online that you'd do well to read. There are also stacks of wikis, forums and reddits online so google for tips and advice on everything. Most are pretty helpful. You might need to play with a real-life tablet as your fourth console!
You don't need to fight much - and at first you'll be Harmless for ages so you'll only get Harmless or Mostly Harmless enemies sent against you which are pretty soft if you've any flying combat game experience at all.
I've found missions to be much more lucrative than trade. If you keep coming back to your home base you can keep doing missions for the same faction and gain reputation which gives you loads money when you have an increased rep. Once you've made some cash to upgrade your ship you can start choosing more rep as rewards to then gain more cash for later missions.
For trading these are handy.
I used this when starting off but not sure it’s still relevant.

Just purchased - was deadly bitd, stealing time on my brother's 6128.
Only just started ff7 as well
Thanks chaps, appreciate the pointers. Can’t wait to get stuck in 😎
I'm working from Dekker base in Rho Cancri btw.
I'm going to hit purchase on it, its only 14quid and we may well be holed up indoors for god knows how long
You buggers are making me jealous with your home ‘working’ 😂
So I’ve downloaded it, run two training missions, buggered up my login and now I’m waiting for a support ticket to be processed. I’m such a **** 🙄🙄🙄
As an aside; how do people communicate in game? Am I going to need to get one of those headset thingies? 😳 I’ve literally NO experience of MMO gaming.
I left the newbue training zone way too quick.
Currently budding cash to get the cobra, another 2 nights and I should be able to get it.
:Ninja: imperial slaves

On Playstation, you wear a headset then you host or join a 'party' at which point you can talk to all the people in it i.e. your mates. You can then all log onto your game and find each other in the game.
Slightly oddly not everyone in a party has to be playing the same game, but whatever. You can also do text comms I think but what a ball-ache that would be.
imperial slaves
Morals out the window airlock already I see. I'm saving up for the next level ship which is likely to cost 10-15mCr but I'm not sure what.

I can heartily recommend the Asp Explorer for around half that, and then you'll have a nice amount for spending on upgrades. It's maneuverable enough for most dogfights, has decent weapon slots, excellent jump range, plenty of cargo/cabin space. I had one for ages, did all my Imperial ranking up in it and was very handy for those big-money delivery/source missions that helped me save for the Imperial Clipper. Even had a planetary vehicle hangar and earned some very decent money for those "scan the thing on that planet in such-and-such system" type missions.

... and presumably you'll need an active PSN sub?
Yeah I think you need PSN sub for all online games 🙁
I'm, excuse me, 'Golden' as I've got the Live Everything for like three years on the back of a stupidly cheap offer MS did a little while ago. Just thought it was worth mentioning in case anyone didn't realise.
Right. I’m up and running! Wow. This game is a serious time sink 😂. I still have no idea what half the buttons do, but I’ve just completed my first four baby missions (as well as the training missions, obvs); couriering and a scan/scoop the data type mission. Got interdicted and then left alone by a pirate because I was worthless, lol; small mercy of being a noob I guess.
I’m going to step out from solo into open play tomorrow evening I think.
Initial impressions; wow, this is massive, and complex but fascinating. I love the hyperspace and super cruise mechanics. It all looks gorgeous 😎
Cmdr ‘V8ninety’ 👍🏼
I feel I should issue a little warning :

Once you're in, you're in.
I'm up for a bit of wing action with noobs.
Think I still have you on my list Molly.
I can’t recall what I changed mine to as they did a promotion to change your ID for free.
Drac-Ster
Very original.
Decided to download this again and give it some screen time this evening.
Thought it would be a good idea to head out of the bubble and see some things so plotted a course for the Lagoon Nebula via Thor’s Eye. 5000ly and 98 jumps later I arrived at the Asteroid station (Attenborough’s Overwatch I think?) in Lagoon Sector (this is with an engineered DBX that jumps 52ly per jump). Got a little too close to the Black Hole at Thor’s Eye and nearly got pulled into it. Made a couple of million in selling exploration data.
Will probably explore tomorrow and take some screenshots.
Can’t be denied it is a beautiful game.
Everyone needs skeletons in their closet - some illicit trading is always good.
Just seen that the non-deluxe version is on PSN for £8.99
I've bought it thinking I've got a bargain, but then noticed the delux was £13 above somewhere!
Whats the difference between the versions? Should I cancel and find the deliuxe version?
I'll put a new psn on if this is a good price!
Shame all you guys are on PS4.
Mols, what ship you buy really depends on what you want to do in the game.
I spent a lot of time exploring so I bought an AspX and fitted it out for long trips outside the bubble - no weapons, big fuel scoop, two repair modules, SRV bay and I'd spend a solid couple of weeks going somewhere, trips were anything up to 30,000ly and hundreds of jumps.
I bought a Python and did a bit of trading - you can easily make a few million a run, but its not the most exciting way to play. I'll fit it out later for either passenger runs or mining
Recently, I've mainly be bounty hunting and doing anti-pirate missions in my Alliance Cheiftain. Its a beast, I can easily take on "wing" missions myself. This generally get a few million credits per mission and you can also grab a lot of materials from the destroyed ships for engineering.
Next on the agenda is jumping back in the AspX and heading out of the bubble to grab a load of raw materials to do so more engineering and try and unlock as many engineers as possible.
EDDB is definitely not cheating, the game is absolutely vast there is no way you could discover enough of it on your own.
I've got 300+ million credits in the bank!
The deluxe vesrion will include the Horizons upgrade, it gets you more ships, planetary landings and engineers. It does add a fair bit to the gameplay, for a fiver more is definitely worth it
you can easily make a few million a run
How? The largest profit margin I've seen is about 1,300Cr per unit.
I had a good night last night - I spent all my money on armour and power for my Keelback rather than put it towards a new ship. Then on the way back from that place I found a system that was having a boom, and I noticed that there were boom time deliveries on offer within the system for silly money. So I spent a few hours ferrying semiconductors and insulating membranes between three ports - at each drop-off there were more delivery missions to one of the others. I had four or five on the go at a time. I got almost no heat, and made 8mCr which is not bad for Harmless.
Currently its abour £23 so quite a bit more for the deluxe - might see if I can upgrade after playing for a while
Thanks @richmtb
How? The largest profit margin I’ve seen is about 1,300Cr per unit.
Use EDDB and you can find routes that give you 9000 credit per unit. If you can find a good two way route you can bump this up even more and a Python can carry nearly 300T of cargo.
Its not the most interesting way to play but it is profitable.
If you are looking for a grindy way to make money then passenger missions are probably better.
Just downloaded this on the laptop, not sure how it will run though 🙁 probably not at all so may be resigned to getting it for the PS4 as i'm not about to drop 2k on a gaming rig, mrs wont let me/no space/new baby soon/house move soon priorities apparently...

Ah, Righto, gotcha. Care to recommend a headset for reasonable money? Cheers.
I’m up for a bit of wing action with noobs.
Me too in principle; my opportunities are a little limited, but we should give it a go 👍🏼
Currently its abour £23 so quite a bit more for the deluxe – might see if I can upgrade after playing for a while
PSN digital copy is way cheaper if you have PS+
Head over to LHS 2212 for some boomtime deliveries.

Any bluetooth headset works but you can also plug straight into the controller. There are bajillions about, you've probably already got one from an old phone.
Another option for anyone wanting to make money fairly quick is the Road to Riches website.
Put in a start system and a finish system with the FSD range of your ship and it'll plot a route through systems that have valuable scannable planets in. Also useful as it unlocks Felicity Farseer (as you travel the required distance from your start system) and then you can sell the data to her and gain access to L5 engineering that she offers.
Decent way to make a few mil in a couple of hours as it's fairly safe/involves no combat.
you’ve probably already got one from an old phone.
I tried one from an old phone when my official MS one died. It was quite astonishingly bad. Fortunately my GF bought me a proper one for my birthday.
So I’ll enter open for the first time from about 6pm this evening. Anyone care to lay a bet on how soon I get pwnd/murderhobo’d/ganked*?
*whatever the word is, lol
You probably won't. I've been in Open since I started and I don't think I've seen another player - unless they are called things like Ollie McFollie.
I bought the Asp Explorer and part-exed my Keelback so I had the new ship and 11mCr in the bank. Blew the lot down to my last 60k on upgrades. I haven't put in a fighter, but I might yet. They are such a PITA to deploy, but now I have a better ship it might not be quite so heart-stopping to sit there whilst stabbing buttons in my crotch.
Don't think the AspX can take a fighter bay but could be wrong.
It's pretty good in combat anyway, better than the keelback from what I can remember.
Elite was the best thing on the BBC Micro back in the day and I played it to death (and to Elite ranking). Loved it.
Elite Dangerous, looks pretty, too much detail, the "realistic" flight sim too complex, the large amount of controls are confusing, and way too long to achieve anything.
Got bored and gave up.
That's the thing. Original Elite had all the gameplay bits and simplified the flight controls so people could enjoy playing it. I believe that was some of the conflict between original creators Bell & Braben that led to their falling out. Braben wanted physical realism. Bell was fine with an arcade style space trading sim. Braben went on his own for the sequels and they'll all been hampered with too much complexity or difficulty in flying.
Still, with potential extra time available and renewed interest I might fire up Dangerous again. I feel I need fancy joystick controls though and I'm just on PC with keyboard and mouse.
Though it's probably moved on a lot in last couple of years and I need to buy another expansion pack or something to keep up. That's another problem. It's online only and evolves.
Flying's not that hard, really - space physics is basically the same in combat. Just a few too many buttons for a PS controller.
The only issue I have with it is needless button pressing opportunities. E.g. when you come out of hyperspace at one star, you have to fly your way around to point at the next star and manually press the button again. I mean in real life, if you had a ship capable of docking itself, it could easily use autopilot in space to get you where you need to be. I'd like to be able to use full autopilot to get anywhere, if I wanted. Then the opportunities to actually yourself could present themselves through the actual mission/trading gameplay.
Back in the days of BBC Micro Elite we also had a game in school where you had to run a fleet of trucks to manage a haulage business. Same kind of thing, but you didn't do any driving yourself you just managed the trucks. Even that would work fine in Elite, with all this gameplay there'd still be stuff to do.
Thing is though - yes, it's a sim, sims are complicated. That's the draw for many people - if you aren't drawn in to that, don't play sims. I tried to play Falcon 4.0 back in the day, that was far harder. I recently got the modernised version and got daunted by that too. You have to study a 200 page book to understand how to fly the plane and operate the weapons systems. In Elite it's hold the down button and press X to target, and R2 to fire.
Here we go... 😎
When you new players get enough ARX points, changing your COVAS (the computer’s voice) to Leo is a nice touch, as it’s Norman Lovett.
Leo is a nice touch, as it’s Norman Lovett.
Spotted that; love it. How do you get ARX?
This game is gorgeous 😍
You earn them through trading, exploration or combat. It adds them on at the end of every play session I think (I've only played a couple of times since they brought it in so not 100% certain)
Or you can buy them.
Star Citizien Alpha spoiled me rotten. Can't go back to Elite, just have to wait till SC becomes a proper game with a proper universe as opposed to a couple of planets.
Nothing in Elite comes remotely close to walking on to your millennium falcon sized ship in first person, sitting down on the pilots seat, turning it's systems on and then engine - before finally zooming off into space.
No game has given me the same "holy ****ing shit" since playing X-wing as a small child.
Again, Freespace.
I backed Star Citizen, I really should look to getting my money back as it's increasingly looking like vapourware.
It will be a shame if it does end up vaporware.
I mean they did eventually release Duke Nukem Forever so who knows.

That's in the roadmap for Elite.

Yeah there is a future update planned called "Space legs" apparently you will be able walk around ships and space stations.
I made it to the high grade materials system last night and landed to go get some materials for engineering. It nice exploring on the surface but I forgot how much I hate driving the shitty little SRV.
Tried Star Citizen. Ran like absolute garbage on a more than capable system so spent a few hours changing configs etc with no benefit so got a refund.
Carried on with some exploration last night, currently heading to Colonia and have stopped in the Eagle Nebula.
There's one taken at a Neutron Star for some 200LY+ jumps. Using Neutron stars for long distance travel is great, there's a guide online has to how to do it properly.
Another showing the benefits of the fuel scoop and never having to pay for fuel again.
Now I just have to figure out how to get my ship back as while out in the SRV for the last photo my ship was taken into the hanger at Eagle Point and is now stuck in there.

This has been talked about for years, along with atmospheric planet landings.
I’d definitely like to see the latter as it would be nice to land on earth, for example. Might just be too much coding though to include as free DLC
It's not very user-friendly, is it? I think I've accepted a mission, flown to the space port it wanted me to, and can see no way of completing the mission. 🙁
Go to the mission board at the station you’ve arrived at, the faction you have done the mission for should be highlighted. Click on it and it should show the mission at the top with a complete button. Click that and get paid.
On a side note, when doing delivery missions you have to actually collect the cargo from the mission giver rather than buy it. Learnt that the hard way when I selected the amount I had to take and didn’t click “add to hold” so promptly flew off leaving the cargo behind. The outer space version of leaving your shopping at the checkout.
I think I’ve accepted a mission, flown to the space port it wanted me to, and can see no way of completing the mission.
What kind of mission?
Some you get the money remotely, some you have to go back to the original station. Also, when you accept the mission you don't automatically get the stuff - you have to click in and collect it but you have to move the slider all the way to the end and THEN click collect - it's really easy to mess this up and end up in your situation, I've done it loads.
Aaa, found the mission board - ta! 🙂
Christ, I'm crap at combat.
Well, initiating and killing.
The inbetweeny bit where I'm shooting lots is fine.
Ship upgraded, quite rich and now looking to get to earth.
Presume you can?
You need a permit to enter the Sol system. You get one by completing missions for the federation until your rank is high enough with them.
Too tip: The Sol system is fun to have a look around but don't play it in open its full of gankers waiting to ruin your day
Cheers, I'm only going to get the trophy, then on to sagatarius A for the next.
In the process of downloading this. Use to love the original and sadly use to fill in the pilot's log religiously.
I just know I'm going to be shit at this though.
I think I best install this on my spare ps4 too as the main TV is used by the Mrs. 🙁
#humblebrag 😉
Friend request sent Mol...
Currently 75% off on Steam, £4.99 for vanilla or £9.99 for the Commander Pack with Horizons.
I'll be having me some of that...
Guessing it’s quite graphics hungry and wouldn’t run on a bog standard Windows 10 laptop?
It claims to run on an AMD HD7250 which is about 8 years old so...
...maybe?
I have an HD7850, I'll let you know how I get on.
Minimum spec is quad core 2.0Ghz and 6GB RAM, I have Quad 3.0 and 8 GB.
Any interest in forming a wing to pop the trophy?
Okay, 2 hours in. Did the first mission and grabbed a couple of courier missions as well then finally figured out how to scoop cargo. My god it's big, this is like Tachyon on steroids.
Perchy, it flung everything to high settings on my computer automatically, you should probably get by. I could test it on my laptop if you like?
Any interest in forming a wing to pop the trophy?
Totally; but PS4 here.
Cmdr V8ninety

PS4 here too.
I'll try and work out how to find/link in with you.
I'll join a wing for a bit. Usually playing around 8.30pm. Drop me a PSN message, I have it on my phone.
I'm currently looking for something to do having finished milking the boom in the system I was in and upgraded my new ship a fair bit. I had the engineer invite from Farseer and now trying to find meta alloys without 'cheating' too much. That involves a 300Ly detour to the Pleiades, so I'm dragging my feet a bit.
Even with my upgraded ship I got my arse handed to me even in a low intensity combat zone. I really don't think I have my loadout and my combat process sorted out.
I had two turreted beam lasers but they took too much power and slowed down; and then fragment cannons which rarely fired because I was too far away or they were in the wrong 0place, not sure which. Now back to pulse lasers and cannons.
I need to take some easy missions to practice killing. On the high value ones I always run away from fights cos the cargo is too valuable and the fine is too big.
Mol, I’m next available for winging it on 3rd, 4th and 5th 8pm till about 1am if you’re about. I’m currently blatting about in a Cobra kitted for multirole work, have mostly run risky supply missions. Where shall we RVP bud?
Right.
One of today’s jobs is to install this on my second PS4 so I can jump between the 2 depending what rubbish the Mrs wants to watch. 😂
Are you Drac on PSN mate?
Ignore; found ya 😎👍🏼
3rd 4th 5th April I assume.
My hood is currently the Rho Cancri system and around.
Jumped into an AspX, kitted it for mining and spent the day learning I'm rubbish at it. 60k profit.
Reformatted to long range and currently scooting 220ly to a good mining spot. Have gained the midshipman rank so Sol is open now for the trophy drop (opposite direction to where I'm going though).
Supposedly a good way to earn cash as forming a wing is 10mill.
Fired this up yesterday.
I have completed a few of the easier missions. Courier jobs seem to be good value, compared to trading with a 4t cargo hold.
I have tried to get involved in a couple of fights, but discretion has been the better part of valour (running away) once it has all started going south. My dreams of being a big time bounty hunter are still looking a long way off. Perhaps a ship upgrade (hey it is like bikes!).
Matt
I seem to keep running out of fuel and dying. 🙁
