Not sure if this has already been posted on the forum, but there is a fundraiser for Chris Lewis of Patterdale Mountain Rescue who was severely injured recently.
Not sure we need to revisit whether or not the campers were at fault... but I know the community on here is very good at putting their hands in their pockets - we all love and respect mountain rescue in the UK and it looks like Chris Lewis won't walk again.
Good post Joe, my attempt got one reply whilst the bickering continued in full flow. Here's hoping he can have the best future possible.
Hi Joe, great shout just logged in To see it this was here and if not post it! Not sure if admin would fancy putting it as a sticky?
Yep no interest in debating the rights and wrongs of if the campers should have been here or not. I’ve been very lucky that my only experience of the MRT’s have been at their fund raising events and stealing cuddles from the search dogs at their events!!! I hope I’ll never need them (like the RNLI! I worked on boats and saw some stupid stuff on the water,) but I’m also keenly aware at how the simplest slip walking the dog or on the bike by the best prepared can turn out nasty I was relieved to see the Atom packs chap was alright after a tumble that could have been awful of an unremarkable bit of trail. There by the grace of god go we and all. It’s just the nature of the amazing place that’s the Fells and mountains.
It’s a terrible accident that’s hurt a chap who’s put others first in countless times never asking the question of if he should go, I feel so grateful that they are there but also it’s really hit home to me that when you do go out it’s as safe and responsible as possible as it’s not just me or my family but these people too you know.
Nothing to say other than mods can we make this a sticky please.
....and of course a big thank you to all MRT members 👍
The BBC thread needs heavily moderating to take out the pointless debate and focus on the individual that gave time for others and may be wheelchair bound....
Yep, sticky for this... a fair few on here have been helped by MR Teams...
Surely anyone who gets in trouble has made a mistake, that's how it went wrong. Thus its is almost always the rescuee's 'fault' .
That's why Mountain rescue types are so great, they get out there and do it.
I've donated.
Keep this for promoting the cause please, the original thread can be used for the rights and wrongs.
Good call.
Done.
I felt very affected by this. As a runner, cyclist and hill walker I am very aware of Mountain Rescue and always raised funds for our local MRT at the fell race I organised. I saw the link on Twitter this morning and donated prior to seeing this. Well done OP for putting it up here. I may be dreaming but I hope that the publicity around this incident may give people pause for thought if they are considering doing something that could affect others if things go wrong.
Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks
I picked up on this terrible story just about 2pm today and hit the fundraising page to contribute.
Good to see that in the last 3 hours its collected another £75k.
Over £300k now
Morning bump for Chris Lewis.
Well on track with over £370k now...
Now over £630k 👍
With 2 close friends in mt rescue, it is an extremely worthy cause. They go above and beyond the call of duty sometimes.
