Bit quiet today, so I thought I'd start a me thread.

£2.99 off the internet with free delivery, they work quite well considering.

Guess what my body fat percentage is?

Do you want it as a S.M.U.G value ?

Are they more or less accurate than your fast twitch muscle calipers?

is the clue in the question? - if you've ordered them off the internet is that because you can't physically get out the door?

They're electronic. If you pinch more than a certain amount it says 'oi fatty'. If you pinch more than an inch it automatically orders Special K off the internet.

Use them on your nose.
Take a photo (don't use a tripod).
Post result up on the "Photos I am really proud of" thread.

Thank you

According to the internet, average body fat for an adult male sprinter is 8-10%, so I'm assuming you'll be around that figure? (as opposed to being a round figure obvs)

they work quite well considering.

does this mean you've validated them against an appropriate benchmark or that the result is approximately believeable and maybe a little bit lower than you expected?

i always believed that the accuracy of skinfolds is down to the skill of the person using them but I guess if they're electronic they look after that. Maybe there is an alternative to the "what hole is my belt on" method 🙂

Next up, Molly tests those fat % scales, which shoot electric bolts through your nuts to ascertain how fluffy you are.

he's pinch Tracy from Accounts' bum if thats what you mean. I think thats why people refer to her as The Benchmark (or am I thinking of notches on bedposts?)

No they aren't electronic of course, I was being sarcastic.

why do you care?

Curious to see how light I might actually be able to be.

No it means they appear to be slightly less likley to snap than I expected.

So, these are actually arse measuring calipers ?
In that case, I suspect the reading may be much higher.

After a recommendation on here, I've finally got round to reading the book "Faster" by M. Hutchinson.
A pattern I'm seeing again, the same I saw in "tomorrow we ride", "Fallen Angel" and many other books about cycling.
Is one of epic focus, commitment and a dedication to consistently pushing deep into the world of discipline and suffering. In order to achieve a goal.
It's a level of commitment and suffering, most of us "normal" folk will likely never pull-off.

In the interests of public safety I feel i must ask:
1. Do you collect moths?
2. Have you got a well in your cellar?

Hhmmm. Not really. Wiggins set himself the goal of track gold. The training and techniques differed from his training to achieve his goal of winning the TdF.
However, the universal constant here, was his commitment, regardless of the goal.

Of course it depends on the goal. Winning a sport MTB race is clearly far easier and requires far less dedication and sacrifice than winning Olympic gold...?

I'd be interesting in knowing how the measurement compares to a set of digi scales. Especially if it justifies me knocking a couple of percentage points off the reading on my scales 🙂

My guess would be that you've no idea because they're broken. I expect the first of several 'what's wrong with my calipers?' threads shortly.

Calipers are pretty good .....once you've got the knack.... The digital scale things are a bit mmm erratic...(or crap)

Tbh a mirrors a surprisingly good test as well you sorta can tell when you hit the 10% 🙂

My digi bodyfat scales did in fact break, which is a shame as it would have been interesting to compare. Mike, £2.99 free postage from Amazon - go for it, let us know 🙂

If I was actively trying to lose weight I'd consider getting some but I mainly just track what's happening generally.

According to my scales, I drop from around 15% on a Monday to around 14% on Friday, then put it back on over the weekend.

Nope ! But anyway, enjoy playing with your calipers. There are worse things to do with your Friday nights.
🙂

The prize is a signed, framed, photo.
Tie-break is that you and whomever else has to then purchase your own calipers, identical to those of the OP. You will then be required to reveal your BF. Highest or lowest... TAKES ALL !
(two signed, framed, photo's)

Poor fella, he should have bought skin fold calipers instead. I've heard that if you lick your calipers twice a day, one can loose as much as an additional Kg !

so just a smidge over 15kg of lard.

so you can visualise, that equates to thirty 1/2kg blocks of lard.

It's scary how much fat even a relatively low % equates to. According to our scales this morning, 15.3% of my 69.3kg is lard; that's 10.5kg!

I did some playing around with a spreadsheet and it's amazing how little extra heft I'd need to count as obese (and how much lower that is that I'd need to be to be obese by BMI standards).

Something like 115000 calories in 15 kg of fat or as I prefer to thing of it, four and a half Greggs steak bakes.

I thought 1g of Fat was 9cal? If so that'd be 135,000 cals?

or 54 days of 2,500 RDA for adult males 😯

Depends, is that 15kg of 'fat' or 15kg of lippid. The fat cells in your body are 72%-87% lippids (i.e. actual fat like cooking oil), the rest is the cells structure and water.

Then there's an argument about how much energy there is in 'fat' because the body uses up quite a bit in trying to burn it IIRC it's 8.7kcal of usefull energy, 9.5kcal in total. So if you eat 1g of fat, 9.5kcal, which is then stored as about 1.3g of fatty tissue, then you only have to burn off 8.7kcal to lose it again.

So to lose 1kg of fatty tissue the actual number of calories is closer to 7200kcal.

Is it marbling though, or rind? I like to think I do't have many bits that you'd cut off and leave on the side of the plate, but that I'd have a really good, juicy flavour.
