Through work, as a second workstation. It was going spare so I thought I'd see what the fuss was about.

It's pissed me off immediately. Wtf is up with the keyboard? Why do they hve the @ and " switched around even on a UK keyboard? And \ is in the wrong place. Why do this except to be bloody-minded?

Click on the Apple Symbol in the top left hand corner of the screen and then on “About this Mac”

Click on the apple in the corner & then about this mac.

Beaten to it.

Anyway, if you want a second (or third) button, i recommend Magic Prefs.

That's silly.. the Apple world is deliberarely much smaller - that's one of their selling points.

There is no excuse for having the keys mixed up though. That's just wrong.

Try working on a windows VM through a Mac keyboard.
Took me about a month to work out how to unlock it as ctrl alt delete doesn't exist.

That's all very well but which one is the shift button?

Far from it - it is *much* easier to work with a far greater variety of (especially open source) software on Mac than it is on Windows. Being Unix has many, many advantages...

The keys aren't mixed up, they're just in a different place to Windows. The thought of you trolling yourself while you try to become accustomed gives me a little grin. Time to realise just how entrenched you are...

I wasn't necessarily comparing it to Windows, and I was also not necessarily talking about open source.

That's the definition of mixed up. Why be different just for the sake of it? With tens or hundreds of millions of UK keyboards in the UK, what bright spark thought "I know, let's make our keyboards with characters in different places to everyone else" ?

It's a UK spec keyboard because it has a £ on it. So they've gone to the trouble of making it different to the US one. But rather than make the two other changes that UK keyboards have, they just did the one. WHY?

I just write GBP next to the numbers, it's quicker than trying to find the right key combination!

Considering you recently started a thread where you went into raptures about some gimmicky oversized Microsoft tablet thing, all of which will now be gathering dust in the corner of a warehouse, I think we can legitimately ignore your opinions about pooters Molls. Especially decent ones.

Why do you assume that the version you are used to is right? You adapt very quickly, and then when you go back to a "windows" keyboard say "why the heck is the @ symbol not on the 2?" The # may however have been a cock up because americans call # a pound...

Weight of numbers. And I will always be switching between the two which is what the problem is. They've made a problem for us to deal with for no reason. It would cost zero effort to bring the two platforms into line.

I assume it was a Mac keyboard causing all those posts...

Not sure what your point is here but no, it wasn't.

And yet for all those advantages, sales of Macs didn't really begin to compete with PCs until they started using PC hardware and it was possible to dual boot with Windows.

Almost everyone I know who does technical/development work on a Mac has either a dual or triple boot option to allow for Windows and/or Linux.

What is it you're trying to figure out?

One of the great things about Macs a few years ago was that I could set my dad up with one, and be really confident that he wouldn't accidentally break it (like he did with his previous Windows laptop). It gave him confidence to use his computer without feeling like he was tiptoeing on eggshells around it.

I like using them at home because free time is obviously at a premium, so if I'm editing photos or whatever it lets me get on with that, without any operating system faff around the edges.

I haven't used a version of Windows really in anger since Windows 7 though (MacOS at home, Linux at work), so I'm sure it's much improved since then.

Well again this was quite a few years ago (early 2000s) but I have pretty clear memories of Windows XP machines of the time blue screening or failing to detect hardware of various descriptions. Wifi was pretty challenging as I recall.

As I say I've not really used Windows for well over a decade now, but at the time there was a clear difference. Even using OS X (Panther I think it was) for the first time, things like Expose and built in PDF viewing (and saving!) blew my mind.

This is the big problem with Mac users is that their Windows opinions are ten years out of date. W10 is unrecognisable compared to XP.

This is only a slight irritation on the road to computing paradise. Soon you will be wondering why anyone owns a Windows computer, and why Microsoft messed up the already perfect Mac keyboard in the first place.

I just typed the above message on my Mac. It felt really good on my lush keyboard. And I even managed it without a super helpful Windows-esque notification popping up to say 'You are typing a message'.

I would but now I'm locked in!

And besides, opening a file in your web browser of choice is still harder than just pressing spacebar in your file browser.

My point is not so much that Windows is bad (because I have no idea these days) but rather than Macs are actually quite good, and tends to reduce friction.

I can't imagine my parents having a solid backup procedure in place without Time Machine for example. And if I lose my phone I can restore a new one (once I've sold my soul to buy it that is) from the backup in the cloud.

Really windows backup is easy, use google drive, simple, android phones have done that for years. So blind you can't see?

I own rimless glasses. But my latest ones are thick black framed. Much more on-trend.

That's hardly what I said. Let me spell it out:

"Windows 10 is as good as MacOS"

Time Machine made it really easy for people to backup properly well before Windows did. And yes, Android phones that you get software updates for for 2 years (that arrive 6 months late) if you're lucky and buy the right one.

All this said and done, I'm not a huge fan of Apple's current desperate desire to make everything really thin at the expense of things like USB ports. The magnetic power adaptor has honestly saved my laptop from death at the hands of the power cable more times than I can think of.

Because you need to keep your blinkers on, so you don't waver in your devotion to The Great Company.

If you actually looked at a Windows 10 machine you might have a crisis of faith. Then where would you be? What would you do in your coffee shop over your latte? How would you look your architect mates in their rimlessly glazed eyes?
