I’ve been called for Jury Service starting today for 2 weeks. I’ve told my employer who have been pretty good and said don’t take the Micky but see you in 2 weeks.
Comms from the court has been poor, but I get the impression that rather than coming in to court to sit in a room and be selected, in essence you now do it from home because of COVID ?
On Friday I got a text saying
You are not required to attend @@@@@ Crown Court on Monday 10th May 2021. Please await further instruction on Monday 10th May 2021.
So does that mean I am supposed to go back to work today, or am I now in the equivalent of the waiting room waiting to be picked aka I can go out for a bike ride until I receive another message ?
I will try and ring the court, but I tried on Friday and couldn’t get through
Did jury service about 10 years ago. So pre covid. Sounds like there are either no cases today or less likely that there are cases and you've not been picked at random. It's unlikely the second one as there are reasons that mean you can't do a case if you are picked. Prime one being that you know the defendant. This means they need spare bodies in such a scenario.
So yeah if you can work for your employer today, and you want to, then you can go for it, but you could get called in to court tomorrow.
I did mine in Feb, if it helps this is what I had at Lincoln Crown Court. I was called in to the building rather than doing it online. They had taken pretty good measures with the jury waiting in a courtroom so we were really spread out.
I got daily text messages telling me about what was happening the following day. In my expereince (which may or may not be true for all jurors) if I was told I was not needed for the day it was for the whole day and not that I got another text later in the day saying come in now.
I was one of the sapre bodies Jeffl mentions so I never got to sit in on an actual case. I was called in and had to confirm I had no knowledge of the defendent, witnesses or locations and then got sent home as I was not one fo the 12 chosen jurors. I was looking forward to a juicy murder case...
From my experience(admittedly 12 years ago) this means that you definitely won’t be needed today, but may be called in tomorrow. Having said that I had three days in court out of my two weeks. My employer expected me to work if not called in, someone else who used the ‘not required’ days as extra days off was given a bollocking when it was found out, but this may well have been as a result of the employer continuing full pay during jury service which not all companies will.

Basically this. You are still on the list of people who "might" be needed so you need to be available for the next two weeks. Certainly in the past when I've been called I had to phone in every day to hear if I was required to attend the court. As I wasn't I went to work each day. Eventually I was told I wasn't needed at all.
Wife was called to Derby a couple of months back. Attended in person. Queued for an hour to get in the building through security etc. Inside everything was clean and well spaced out.
Wasn't selected for the trials available. Was sent home to await any further trials starting up, none did. So only attended half a day.
Take your own drinks, none are provided, not even water.
Colleague starts at Nottingham today, so will update if she says anything.
I did mine a few years ago, had to turn up Day 1 and Day 2 and hang arund doing nothing for most of the day before being sent home, then was told not to come back till the following week so I went back to work. Week 2 I phone Sunday eveng as instructed and found I didn;t need to go in - went in Tuesday though and was selected
I was informed confidetnially that the guy who acted like a bit of an arsehole was told to come in every single day and sadly was never selected to sit in a trial.
Based on the above, I'd say don't take the piss and do some work today if you're WFH - although if you're supposed to go into work and it's too late then go for a ride. You will probably hear later today if they will need you to go into court tomorrow
