To drift back to topic a bit, my recycling has just been collected by a crew all sporting Union Jack affros! Her Majesty would be so proud.

I hope A-A isn’t the kind of sheeple who gives and receives gifts at Christmas, or eats chocolate eggs at Easter. Given the damage that religion has done to the world.

Lot of assumptions in play there.
Christianity is fine by me, seems to focus big on helping the poor and needy and not hoarding all the money for yourself. Everyone is equal in the eyes of the Lord or somesuch isn't it?

You will be relieved to learn in that case that Mrs Windsor has an authoritative role within Christianity in the UK.

She has lots of roles, in the main though one of her best characteristics is doing nothing whatsoever, at all, ever....in contrast to her meddling son.
Pretty sure she didn't invent Easter eggs and Christmas either.

Anyway I am a Roman Catholic 😜

Some of the music is good, but i don't really understand why there are so many people in the mall, other than to be able to say they were there.
My hope is that after a suitable period once the Queen passes on, we can abolish the lot of them and claim our land back

Disappointed they went with ‘Circle of life’ from the Lion King.

Just flicked this on and it really is truly, compellingly mesmerisingly awful

Craig David in a sparkly jumpsuit, then fish face in a purple tux, all cheered on by flag-waving, forelock-tugging simpletons

Christ on a bendybus!!! 😳

No wonder Lizzie swerved this one. It’s embarrassing for all involved

No that was me salad dodger, I was grizzlygus on the old forum. I have always made that clear and been perfectly open about it, I have never pretended to be someone else.

I was actually previously Ernie_Lynch but when my last email account no longer functioned I decided it would be simpler to just re-registered. I specifically used ernielynch for my new account so that there would no doubt that it was me.

And no gardentiger I am not an undeclared mod. By your comments I assume that you have had some moderation issues, which I guess might at least explain why you deny being dannyh.

I can't tell if they're sort of scraping the barrel for acts (genuine question: would you do the jubilee celebrations if you were still a big/relevant artist?) or if they're just trying to cover their bases. Craig David? and who the hell is/was Mimi Webb?

I find the very obvious/laboured diversity of the acts quite interesting. Reflective of current British demographics? A desperate last ditch love letter to fringe commonwealth nations looking a bit republic-y? Trying to make the royals look relevant to a younger generation?

Enjoyed the camera shots of the royal sprogs just looking bored. Nice to see they're still normal kids in some respects!

Brian May’s been on with Roger Taylor ( & some other gadjie) George Ezra’s on now, I think Rod Stewart’s coming on & Diane Ross has been mentioned as making an appearance.
Who do you reckon should be on?

Actually fair point, hadn't seen Brian May and actually have a little bit of time for George Ezra. The snippet I watched just presented a slightly odd cross section.

My sister made a good point, didn't Keith Flint (rip) go through a bit of a Union Jack phase? Would the Prodigy have been offered a slot? 😆

After posting not much is happening round my way, I drove past a wee building site that had some walled blocker panels installed...sprayed on them was 'F### the Monarchy - Feed the poor' - very few flags and bunting around so I guess that sentiment is probably shared by more than 1 person.
Can't really argue that point but if the longer weekend means people talk to neighbours more then it can't be bad as community is important.

Good showing of the UK to the world.

Tomorrow will be massive. Wouldn't be surprised if a billion people over the globe see some part of tomorrow. It's a massive part of history - the Queen is probably the most famous and recognisable person on Earth, I'd imagine? I couldn't seriously think of someone more so

We're lucky to have that from our tiny island let's be honest!

Sod all to do with the royal bash, more to do with helping women over the last 200+ years.

Ermm why? Being a constitutional monarch isnt the most challenging job in the world and her main achievement seems to be being a fairly late born child to a monarch who died fairly young and so getting to this jubilee.
Now Henry III had to put some effort in to reach the golden jubilee although carried by his son towards the end. Likewise Edward III did well although it went to bits in his later years as he got ill. James I and VI was in a somewhat better position to get old although failed with his offspring.

About the one real job left for the queen was providing suitable heirs which isnt looking promising.

The concert was bland as expected but weirdly mesmerising. Kudos to Stephen Fry though.

Plenty of events on around where I live in Clackmannanshire and a weekend of glorious sunshine too. Loads of folk out, kids have had a great time with the gala and all that stuff. It's been nice for them after missing out for 2 years. Our youngest's mind was blown by seeing a funfair for the first time.

Appreciate it's not everyone's cup of tea but does mostly seem to be being enjoyed in this part of Scotland. Daughter brought a massive painting of the Queen home from school and it's up in the window which is yet to be egged.

You didn't see the thousands on Tay Street with the classic cars then? Or the hundreds who came to the summer fair at the library on Friday?

I've been slightly involved with the organisation of a few jubilee events in Perth and attendances have been much higher than predicted. Probably due to the excellent weather as much as anything else, but still, people have come out and joined in.

But just round the corner it looked like this:

Am I missing something? What’s she done with her vast wealth and ceremonial power?

It's a question which you have seemed to have asked before AA, so maybe this will help you understand the alternative point of view. It is a gushing tribute from Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/nicola-sturgeon-first-minister-scotland-bbc-snp-b2093382.html

In case you have paywall issues here are the points she makes:

Nicola Sturgeon has spoken of her “deep respect” for the Queen, saying her private conversations with the monarch are one of the privileges of being Scotland’s First Minister.

In an interview with the BBC, the First Minister said even those who were not “great supporters” of the monarchy still thought of her as a “quite extraordinary individual”.

She said: “One of the things that I feel great respect for the Queen around is just that dedication, that selfless commitment to duty and to service.

I think it is fair to say that, that opportunity to talk with her, to benefit from her knowledge, her wisdom and perhaps above all the completely unique perspective she has on modern world history, is something that I deeply value and will always really treasure.”

She continued: “I have benefited from it, I have learned from it and it is something I will always cherish.

“She is somebody who has had a front-row seat on the last 70 years of history.

“She has met every world leader over that time. She has seen up close and personal some of the key events of history.

The knowledge that gives her, the wisdom that gives her, the perspective that gives her is much more valuable in these conversations then any specific thing that she will perhaps say.”

I hope that helps you to understand how people who clearly admire Mrs Windsor see her.

That does not really compute, to me at least.

Being a person who by good fortune of birth (and death of her father) has been sniffing around many many democratically* elected world leaders for 7 decades, certainly gives her an outlook and set of experiences that are unique. But why would that make her someone to admire? Mrs C's grandma is still alive and coincidentally born the same year. She is remarkably sparky and with it and still lives independently in her own small home. Not in a sheltered housing facility - just a regular flat. She goes out to the shops, cooks for herself and cleans the home. She spent her working life as a cleaner and spent her middle years getting some academic qualifications in evening classes that were not an option when she was young. It turns out she was just as genetically predisposed as queenie (arguably more so given the different levels of help and privilege one of the two has had all her life). If they had been swapped at birth I don't doubt she would have been an equal authority on what it's like to knock around with democratically* elected world leaders. It's not a trait to be 'admired' in Liz Saxe-Coburg - it's just a happy accident that happened to her. In getting dewy eyed for her, you are really applauding what a system can do for a person given that much privilege. Two capable old dears, with 96 years of very different life experiences, determined by the womb they emerged from. One gets flag shagged, the other a trip to tesco express for her Sunday dinner.

* - just popped that there to point out the obvious elephant in the room (the alive one, the one Phil didn't shoot).

I'm neither for or against the royals in any big way. The only thing about them I can say with complete certainty is that I wouldn't want to be one for all the tea in China. I can't see any way a person who has been born into the royal arena could possible even begin to know what living a normal life would be like - and I'm not sure they can really be blamed for that. I imagine the palaces they live in are very much like living in 5 star hotels. Very comfortable - for sure, but not "home"....

They seem to me just to be a fairly large family with all the "interpersonal / relationship" problems that most families have but with the added problem of being under the microscope 24/7. Being a Royal doesn't in any way mean your personality is going to be flawless - quite the opposite in fact - like so many wealthy or powerful people, the position they are in gives them the opportunity to behave very badly and get away with it if they are so inclined.

As far as their wealth is concerned, the value of this crown or that crown, this palace or that palace, how they could sell some of their stuff to "feed a hungry child..." well there's certainly money there, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to sell the royal jewels or properties even if they wanted to / were allowed to? In any case, selling of the "Royal family silver" isn't a sustainable long term answer to the UK's financial problems.
