I'm trying to get a replacement passport.
When I try and upload my scanned photo it says the file must be 50kb minimum. My photo is 24kb.
I'm nowhere near my scanner now so unable to re scan.
Is there an easy way of increasing the file size?
I'm on a mac running Mojave.

Can you use a different format? For example if you save a copy as Bmp it might result in a larger file

It has to be in JPEG format

50kb is probably the minimum required to get sufficient resolution for the photo. If you contrive to make it a lager file size, it's not going to make the image sharper so you'll have to re-scan it most likely.

Resize the image in photoshop to a higher pixel density.

How on earth have you managed to scan a photo to get the file size at 24kb? When I scan a photo or slide the file size is closer to 24Mb!

Upscaling is unlikely to work, the result won't be of good enough quality. JPEG is a lossy compression algorithm which means that once data is thrown away you can't get it back. I'd rescan properly.

Not at my mac now to test but I'd think you could increase the image size using the Preview app and/or export as a higher quality jpeg to increase the file size.

Have to say though I can't imagine a 24 kb image would be anywhere near suitable quality-wise whatever you do to fool the system. The image I just sent for my sons passport was 4100 kb.

I did a screenshot thing of the picture. That worked. Thanks anyway.

I imagine it will get rejected due to the image quality - I assume you don't need your replacement passport quickly?

The Passport Office are quite picking about what's acceptable in a passport photograph, but I'd have thought that you might be better off getting someone to take a photo of you with your (or their) smartphone and using that.

-- Edit --

Too late, I didn't spot that you'd sorted it.

Well, he's made the file size larger. I'd be interested to know if the quality of a screenshot of a small JPG is good enough for the passport office to accept.

Have to say though I can’t imagine a 24 kb image would be anywhere near suitable quality-wise whatever you do to fool the system. The image I just sent for my sons passport was 4100 kb.

If you scanned a passport size photo from a booth at fairly low resolution, it would probably come out at that kind of file size.

Next time just get someone to take your photo in front of a plain wall. Phone camera is fine.

I just took a photo of Mrs D on my phone and uploaded that. Worked a treat. Even auto rejected the first because she was smiling.
