Loved rollerball when I was a kid just for the action, watched it as an adult and realised it was a different film with very dark social themes, looks dated now but the themes are still relevant probably my favourite scifi film of the 70's, so thank you James Caan.

Always felt he was a little underused in Godfather.

Yeah silent running is great, and don't forget westworld, but rollerball fools you into thinking it is about the sport "rollerball" when it is in fact about corporate control of government and socioty.

Any way, it was meant to be an RIP thread for James Caan with the usual oppressive sentimentality.

Arse. Didn't know he was dead.
Slither was my favourite.

Ha you beat me to it MSP. Just finished Googling Caan's character's name in Rollerball when I saw your thread. Anyway its a sad loss. If you like a bit of old fashioned violence try Sam Peckinpah's The Killer Elite starring James Caan and Robert Duvall.

Yeah, the Godfather was alright I suppose, but he played a key role in this cinematic masterpiece...

Wow, not watched this since the eighties. On betamax 🙂
I've got to watch it again now.
I dont remember much of the film, but remember being very affected by it, the brutality and the manipulation.

During Caan's peak years of stardom, he rejected a series of starring roles that proved to be successes for other actors, in films including M*A*S*H, The French Connection, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Kramer vs. Kramer ("it was such middle class bourgeois baloney"[47]), Apocalypse Now (because Coppola "mentioned something about 16 weeks in the Philippine jungles"[41]), Blade Runner, Love Story, and Superman ("I didn't want to wear the cape"[41]).[47][48]

From Wikipedia.

He was as famous for the roles he turned down as the ones he got.

All I remember is my brother, me and other local kids playing Rollerball with BMX’s and rollerskates. Can’t actually recall the film, is it worth revisiting?

Loved the film Rollerball as a kid. Unfortunately, the only time I tried to roller skate I ended up in A&E.
