Interesting little debate about calling out people for un-PC language vs. Maintaining debate. Well worth a look.
(Obviously that sort of thing never happens on STW)
What do you reckon?
I don’t think either really nailed it, Owen did his usual smearing of ‘the right’, like life is that simple.
The worrying trend in universities to deny a platform to those with non PC opinions is concerning. Personally I would err on the side of free speech for the reasons Jon stated, by bringing these often ridiculous opinions out into debate they can be challenged and yes debated. I don’t agree with there being a consensus that cannot be challenged.
I sit very firmly on the camp where there is only one human race and a binary approach to gender does not accord with reality, but I’m happy to chat about it and don’t think anyone who thinks differently is a bad person who shouldn’t be allowed to voice an opinion.
I think Owen got a bit confused at one point with the example he cited about someone using social media to target gay people, that’s not a free speech issue, it looks like conspiracy or incitement to me

Just because the Tories made a policy to outlaw it, doesn't mean it is happening. Actual cases of no platforming are very rare. Moreover, a distinction should be made between what student unions are doing and what universities are doing. They are separate entities.
You’re right; I was thinking of SU’s
I have no information on the frequency that this happens. Of course it gets a lot of press when it does, which is probably skewing my perception.
The argument is simple and neither expressed it. Context is every thing. And modern society doesn't understand that.
