After thoroughly enjoying the Steve's garage thread I thought I'd revisit our palace of strange delights.
"Home" for me is Weymouth but Ive been renting a studio flat thingy for the last 6 years is in a delightful village near Didcot. Elderly owners who've lived there for 6o years in the case of the landlady and the place has been continually expanded to a big, sprawling monster.
At the back has been a huge garage that the landlord always intended to build a kitcar in. It has access via a gate to the fields behind so any car going out would have had to be towed on a pretty serious trailer.
That never came to pass but a lot of interesting stuff did end up there.
When I moved in the garage was a bit of a mess, pretty full of foliage from outside and a lot of clutter.

As they intend to sell up a lot of the rubbish has been cleared but some interesting stuff lurks in there.
There are 3 big Record vises and this beauty that is still on the bench. Lucky for me as I found that a chain whip is no good for getting a Gates Centretrack cog off a freehub.

Nice enough but hardly unique. Wander past that however and in the corner hidden in the ivy is:

A rather nice manual pillar drill. Tomorrow I'm getting that out and cleaning it a bit.
The blowtorch is firmly in the "light blue touchpaper and retire 12 paces category''

The real mystery item for me is this. A box with a till roll inside but no mechanical bits other than a bell that rings loudly when you pull the drawer out.
I assume it is some kind of till for social events. I know the landlord did do a lot of charity fund raising events over the past 5 decades so that could have been a simple money storage system with a method of noting what came in and went out.

That first picture of the vice belongs on the "Argh! My eye" thread!

I bloomin' love places like that - like Aladdins cave, and I could spend hours just poking around and marvelling at the lives some of the stuff has seen...

I've cleaned up the small blowtorch from Steve's garage. It turns out to be German of WW2 vintage. I've started now on the bigger one which is very much like that one you have. It's going to take a while!

I remember being in Japan for the first time 15 years or so ago and a couple of places we got lunch in while working still had cash draws rather than tills, receipts were hand written.

My parents ran a shop many years ago.

Had a till exactly like that, but not painted, just varnished wood.

I'm really envious of that pillar drill.
