Don't like country, but Johnny Cash is a genius, and that, well lost for words realy. Cheers.

massive NIN fan but cash owns that song, the videos quite emotional too, after watching walk the line its even more powerful

I'm not a fan of country either but I love some Cash tracks/covers.

I've always thought Cash was over-rated, but that is one of the best covers I've heard. Listened to it over and over when it came out. Very poignant.

I find that video really hard to watch for some reason. My dad was a big Cash fan and there's something about the sentiment and the 'decay' of Cash in that video that reminds me of my father in his last couple of months.

Aside from that, a proper artist that appeals to such a broad set of folk.

I think I read somewhere that Trent Reznor was on record as saying that it was Cash's song now.

Almost prefer that version to NIN's original, a bit more feeling in the JC version.

Both my parents were cash fans so grew up listening to him. Kinda forgot about him when they passed away in my early 20's but when I herd Hurt for the first time my wife couldn't understand when tears welled up in my eyes, the memories of my childhood came flooding back. Watched the film walk the line and she's now a fan as well.

Johnny Cash looked after a Canadian lad I know, when he was a kid. JC used to stay at his parents ranch (set up for horse riding and stuff). The lad says he had no idea who he really was then (1980's).
You do get a real sense that he recognises the mistakes he made and the impacts on his family - must be hard viewing for them.

Agree with all of the above - definitely in my top 10 all time songs. Life, death, love...it's all in that three minutes. Just incredible.

I was there for that too. Hairs up on the back of my neck just thinking about it.

Any man who can cover a U2 and a Sting song and make them sound as good as he does has a talent beyond measure.

It's a great cover version.
I like to refer my work colleagues to the JC song "Oney" 😀

Definitely in the top half of my all-time favourite list.

Pretty neat to play too if you know your way around a few chords.

I've got all of those American Recordings - I've got an appalling memory for names, but there's some absolute gems.

The music on that "Hurt" sounds like Husker Du. A NIN, Cash, Husker Du mash-up probably wouldnt be many people's 1st idea for a song.

My mates don't get it (or my family for that matter), but I love Johnny Cash, pretty much all of his music, seems odd for a 25 yr old who doesn't like much other country music, or even listen to music that much, but it's always cash I go to if I do.

Saw a fascinating doc about JC on Sky Arts recently, might still be on rotation...

JC completley owned Hurt, no doubt about it - though there's a particular vulnerableness to Trents version and when I've seen him perform it live its still 'got it'

The first time I really listened and understood the depth of Depeche Mode's personal jesus was the cash version

Hurt is fantastic, obviously, but I Hung My Head does me every time. The feeling he puts into it is beyond words.

I'm not so much a fan of his more modern stuff but I have to admit Mercy Seat is a powerful song.

I see a darkness is great too. As for his many covers I think Sunday Morning Coming Down is the best..

Spent some of last weekend trying to get my partner to see it.

Having said which - surprised no one has posted the other famous cover...

His voice on U2's The Wanderer always gives me tingles.
