Annouced today by Bob Harris. Only retired 2 montgs ago. Didn't listen to him back in his radio one days but remember him from radio 2 drive time and sounds of the 70s over the last decade. The latter was often on the drive home from  trail building, the sound of Sunday afternoon. Openned my ears to the better music from the 70s of which there was more than I thought.

Shall raise a glass later, probably be a  Genfiddich though.

Listened to him all my life from the old days in my bedroom in the early 80s with a pair of Koss headphones plugged into my 'boombox'

He, along with John Peel, Annie Nightingale and of course 'whispering' Bob Harris shaped my musical world.

Proper radio, great man.

A real one off who loved his music. Johnny will be sadly missed.

I remember his Radio Luxembourg days, then over the last 10 years or so with Sounds of the 70s

He interviewed most of the greats of the 60s and 70s.

RIP

RIP

He was one of those rare DJs who was respected and got the best out of his interviewee. I listened to his last show and they allowed him to pick the music he loved, which was a nice touch from the beeb.

A trailblazer in his youth and his laid back lovely voice was enjoyed by many a listener over many decades. He bravely carried on while his voice and health allowed.

It was a bit dusty in our kitchen when I heard the news earlier.

Fond memories of his R2 drivetime slot about 25 years ago - I was commuting between Hampshire and Bristol, so he accompanied me on many a drive home.

When he did that quiz where it was a snippet of someone's getting interviewed and you had to guess who it was. Virtually impossible. It would last for 6+ months before someone got it.

I used to listen to him on Radio Caroline.

As a presenter, he stood the test of time.

Will be missed.

Johnnie Walker was responsible for Radio Caroline's "Kiss in the Car" contest. This involved a couple parking up somewhere and kissing continuously throughout a long slow record. On completion they were to flash their headlights to announce it to other smooching couples.

They could send off from Radio Caroline for an official Kiss in the Car disc, which looked like a tax disc, to display on their windscreen :
