Long standing stalwart of UK cycling... Shit isn't it.

Oh no...he was writing the articles from the very beginning of my inability to ride a mountain bike with ability! That is sad news.
My condolences to his family and friends.
He was among that troop of bike journos who have been around and writing about bikes for as long as I've been reading bike mags and his presence and input will be missed.
Like others he was one of the first that I can remember reading.
Never knew him but reading a bit about him I think I would have liked him.
Thoughts to those who were fortunate to know him and those close to him.
Every great article in early MBUK seemed to have his name at the top of it, I really enjoyed his writing back then. Like Bear, I din't know him, but imagine I really would have liked him.
Nice piece on the road.cc link.
The face of MBUK in my teenage years, especially Grime Time. Sad news, RIP John.
Yeah, as above, he wrote all my favourite MBUK articles back in the day.
The Jason McRoy Facebook page has shared this message from his wife:
“John Abbott Valentine (was Stevenson) died overnight and it was peaceful and pain-free as far as we could tell after a very fast deterioration. Funeral arrangements will be put on> https://www.isjohndeadyet.co.uk/
A life that doesn't need any sugar coating after you're dead was probably a life well lived.
That blows. He was never anything other than honest, engaging and warm on the (far too few) occasions I met him.
All the best to his close ones.
RIP John was a pleasure to meet you.
An absolute force who shaped early mountain biking in its infancy and continued to make waves in cycling right until his death.
Grumpy ****. But so so glad to have known him.
I actually spoke with the man, over the telephone back in 1991.
He was helping me to identify part of a hub.
very sad news. I always enjoyed his enthusiastic approach in mbuk.
RIP - one of the pioneers who got me and many, many others.hooked on this brilliant sport
So sad to hear this. As others have said I always enjoyed his articles in MBUK, especially grime time. I had the grime time book and it helped me get to grips with bike maintenance as a teenager. I met him once at the Red Kite MTB festival in Wales and he was happy to chat and gently took the piss out of me when I struggled to get over the bar in the bunny hop competition. RIP John.
Sad news, I remember John’s scribblings from my early days of riding, or attempting to ride off-road on my ‘88 Stumpjumper, MBUK was the first magazine on the subject I came across, and living close to Bath, and hanging out in John’s Bikes, I did meet one or two of the magazine writers, including Justin Loretz, but I never met John.
I did, however, meet Jason McRoy in Vail at the ‘94 Worlds, and a nicer bloke you couldn’t hope to meet!
My thoughts are with his family and friends.
