Nope nope and nope again. Just because you're wearing safety kit, there is no need to test it
40 deaths from falling from height in 2023
Still 40 too many but compare this to 111 in 1971 (as per the programme indicates), and you can see H&S has definitely improved over the years.
Seems he's still around to tell the tale, he's commenting on the video.

Well I do remember that story very well. And it did take a fair bit of courage cos I was scared up there. Mind you I had tested the harness earlier on the roof of the BBC building so I knew it worked!!!
What a legend.
H&S has definitely improved over the years.
Not enough though!
Crazy man!
Lesley Judd visits a lighthouse and nearly dies in the process! And not much better coming back down!

Doesn't Tom Cruise do some crazy stunts too?
That Lesley Judd clip. Bloody hell, if she'd let go she'd have flipped and gone headfirst into the rocks. John Noakes on Nelson's Column was tame in comparison.
Jeeeezus.
I know it wouldn’t have looked as exciting but couldn’t he have just gone 6ft up the ladder before he jumped off?
Makes my insides go funny.
The 1st one couldn't have been good for his back!

Only in shit films for millions of dollars.
Really glad WaH kit has improved since those days. I use similar kit regularly and I never fancy testing the fall arrest function.
Safety may have improved but many people don't understand the limitations of the kit, have the wrong kit or the difference between fall arrest, work restraint or work positioning.

Nah. Like Lesley's is scary as anything but John is actively climbing and that's a very different level of difficult when you're shitting yourself. The overhang in particular is a bum clincher.
Ultimately the end result either way would be hurty.
HSE Statistics 2023 Show Half of Construction Deaths were Falls From Height
Are there any other significant types of fall?
I remember the Noakes ones, anything like that makes me feel queasy just watching while sat on the couch! Using a ladder to clean my guttering?

"H&S has definitely improved over the years"
Certainly has, one of my first jobs working for a builder bitd was to dismantle a scaffold to a 3 storey building in the centre of Gloucester - neither I nor the other guy had ever touched a piece of scaffolding in our lives 😯
Nowadays I'm so used to everywhere I go to on sites having edge protection that I find walking on cliffs quite unnerving 😕
Are there any other significant types of fall
Yes. Slips trips and falls on the level. Fall arrest kit not much use for them
"It has a breaking strain of 450lbs I'm told, so I should be OK"
Jesus effing christ...... 200kg!! I would have thought the shock loading of a 100kg guy falling would exceed that!
I'd be looking for numbers more like 1000kg - although it's much easier now with modern materials. I race on a decent sized boat and I'm still amazed at the strength of really quite skinny bits of string now.
Nope nope and nope again.

A work mate (H&S consultant too) died as a result of tripping over a door threshold and falling down a flight stairs of 2 steps. Medical evac due to paralysis caused by soft tissue damage and died in hospital around 3 days later.
Other deaths from slips and trips are as a result of sheer bad luck/poor site layout. The victim falls over and gets collected by a passing vehicle.
Gravity is a hard mistress.
Blimey, that Lesley Judd clip, sheesh! Love Fred Dibnah though, that overhang at the top of the chimney is mental and he’s clearing planking out the way with one hand whilst trying to clamber on!
In the early 90s was travelling and spent time in Holland. Became mates with an Irish fella who was a steel erector working on all the tall buildings going up in Amsterdam. He was adamantly opposed to harnesses, or any safety equipment really, convinced that it got in the way and made it more dangerous 🤷♂️

By modern standards even that "advanced" safety gear is very sketchy and makes me realize just how far we've come !
He walked to where he's working and THEN connects. For the deliberate fall off the side he climbs down the side ladder, THEN connects and "falls off" - if he slips before connecting he's gone - a long way away from modern standards.
Also the simple "belt" around the waist is sketchy - the shock loading of the arrest is all on the ribs and I suspect that any prolonged dangling before being rescued he would suffer from significant circulation or breathing issues (on the simulated fall of the side he's out of reach of any way to climb back up so needs someone to actively rescue him).

Static webbing too.
No wonder he went "oof."
Blimey!
Was disappointed that Woolard didn't do any 'Woolarding' in the report though.
