Been a state sponsored MTB rider/climber since mid-November. Trying to find something that pays a little better but has similar amounts of riding/climbing time! No luck yet though 😆

LOL, likewise for me Sandwich!
In fact it was exactly 2 months ago to the day that I was escorted to the front door of the building and shown off site.

"Oh yes", they added, "Happy Christmas".

My redundancy date is the 27th of this month.
On a plus side my redundancy money is paying for a T4 VW camper with a bike rack on it :D. I am going to have plenty of time to use it.

I am a contractor. So I've got no redundancy payment. Of course, since I was paid so highly I've saved a huge sum of money and not spent it on a car, a house and bikes.

On the plus side, the job was doing my head in, and I've got some good leads from another company.

I wish.

Not yet, But I will be redundant sometime between 27th April and 24th Dec 2009. Just as soon as we've successfully transferred all of our machines, processes & jobs to the Czech Republic.

On the plus side our company has a very strong Ethics & Integrity policy - indeed in the US head office they have a whole department focussed on it. So when our savings are spent & the bank manager comes round to repossess the house at least I'll know I was f*cked over in an ethical manner

Process/manufactuing, Six sigma and Lean Engineer looking for something near Swindon

Intercede (based J20 M1) are still looking for c++/javascript/html/xml developers + testers - we can't find anyone.

Good look to all those looking

Booted mid Jan after being booted from a 6 year post last July.

A note on debt. The wonderful Payment protection insurances that I have paid hundreds of pounds too for loan and credit card won't pay up. Because my last job was less than 6 months the insurance is not liable. Hardly surprising they found some way out.

So note to self and others out there. If you are working and haven't been in position for 6 months I would suggest that you check if you are paying said insurance. It would seem that you may as well save the money until 6 months and a day is passed.

I had PPI on a credit card. Binned it straight away when I tried to claim. I'd been made redundant, didn't claim - got a temporary job, then couldn't find work again. I'd been looking for either temp or perm. So they said because it was a temp job I wasn't eligible. If I'd NOT taken the work that was available I could've claimed...

Stupid.

BTW - any of you with engineering/project engineering/management sales etc have a look at www.waterjobs.co.uk, not as many as when I first looked last July and got the job that just bumped me, but still a few all over.

Esp if you don't mind considering UEA

I did exactly the bloody same moles. Didn't claim last summer as I was convinced I'd get a job quick (which I did) and would have had my claim accepted, but cos of only working 3.5 months given the door.

Nice, it's not just bankers that are bankers. Insurance co's probably worse.

So far my PPI is paying up.
But yes as a general rule I agree - banks, credit card co and insurance have been the worst people I've had to deal with in the aftermath of being made redundant.
Recruiment agencies aren't quite as bad but I'm beginning ot be a tad annoyed either at hearing nothing or at being called up by some bloke telling me there's a job as a analytical chemist going in the north of Scotland for £14k/yr and they will be putting my name forward for it...

I was thinking of starting up offering consultancy related to my business rules experience. Maybe become an ILOG partner - sell their software, and sell consultancy to go with it. BRMS (business rules management systems) is a big area atm, but people haven't got experience with it so they don't know how to a) create systems around the concept and b) to mange and do the development.

Problem is I don't think I can do it on my own. I'm really an architect/developer, I can do sales and management but it'd be a stretch and I don't think I could do both.

One more here. I was made redundant last Spring, but have had some contract stints to keep me going and haven't had to touch the redundancy pay (yet).

Have any of you guys claimed jobseekers allowance? I've seen on the govt site it is reduced if you have savings and at a certain level of saving it's not available. How do they check? If someone opened an account in their child's name & put some cash there would they class that as part of the claimants savings?

Is it fraud? Surely I can put whatever funds I want in my child's account? What is to stop anyone paying a chunk off their mortgage and later on increasing the loan to get the funds back?

They mention "savings" but there seems to be no real definition, so could I withdraw funds & keep them under my bed; buy gold; buy stock etc and they won't be classed as savings but still be an asset, just like any of my shareholdings.

Since I've been made redundant I've sold one of my classic cars to get funds, put 2 of my bikes up for sale, sold some bits here etc.

As others have found out, the PPI we've contributed to for years have declined to payout because we found short term contracts to tide us over. If necessary I'd rather stack shelves for 10 hrs a week at the minimum wage than claim JSA. It seems those of us that make provisions for these situations are then disadvantaged when the rainy day arrives.

Me too, finish on the 27th this month. I actually took voluntary, as the job was doing my head in. Redundancy payment should last about 18 months, so hopefully will have time to sort something out!

Triumph Spitfires aren't expensive to buy- they're not in the same league as a Bugatti! It was a hobby just like the bikes we have. It cost & was sold it for less than a lot of the bikes we ride. It's an example of what I'm trying to do to keep the cash coming in, no different to selling off bikes & parts.

FB-ATB - I take your point, but...

When you sign on they will ask you to provide 3 months worth of account details if you have significant savings, if you have moved money in order to increase your benefit they will simply refuse to pay you anything. Savings are considered income. Do a Google search and see the consequences of trying to defraud the state by shifting assets. I double dare you to try it. Over £6000 savings, you loose £1(weekly) per £250 above the £6K , maximum is £16000.

Ive got a couple of months notice to work but being as our pay has been 'erratic' over the last couple of months not holding out much hope of collecting the statutory redundancy pay without taking someone to court. Oh yes the baby is due in two weeks (no chance of paternity leave because the statutory pay is approx £100/week less than I'd get on jobseekers).
Spent several hundred quid, a large chunk of leave I've got remaining, & virtually all the emotional energy I can muster preparing for & traveling to job interviews for jobs that turn out to be conditional on the company getting work it has a 1 in 4 chance of getting and where they can't even be bothered to tell you whether or not your in the running if the work does turn up.

Looking on the bright side....

MTT I supppose it's similar to treading the line between tax avoidance & evasion!
You can quadruple dare me, I'm not about to take the risk- it would end all chance of work in my profession. I'm just curious as I've never been in this situation. I'd guess if they saw a few £k withdrawn, they wouldn't believe it went on drugs & hookers. But if I decided to get a fancy Ti frame & kit it out with CK & XTR that would be alright!?

At the risk of sounding like a Daily Mail reader, you try to protect yourself and then find it works against you. But if you squander it all
then it's no problem.

I've been in discussion with my mortgage lender about making a capital repayment, but having access to further funding if needed. This could look like I'm reducing my savings but on the other hand I'm trying to reduce my monthly outlay.

I'm in a similar position to you mate, though just up the road just north of Cheltenham actually. Anyway, there's LOADS of companies out there after LEAN consultants, and people with experience of Six Sigma I'd say. In these times it's when a lot of the bigger companies are putting more effort into making improvements, or face the consequences!

Anyway, I've got an interview with Industry Forum on Monday afternoon, have been in contact with Unipart (my old company, who do a LOT of CI stuff, and are based up the road in Oxford from you), a couple of companies in Bristol I am waiting to hear from etc. Don't know what level you're at (I've got about 3 years LEAN experience, both implementing and consulting, and am a Six Sigma Green Belt), but if you're more experienced or skilled than me, name your price it sounds like!

If you want any contact details of anyone, let me know, I still know lots of people within this industry.

I'm off at the end of March too. Ex Portman Building Society bod who has basically been working my redundancy notice since 11 September 2006 when the merger with the Nationwide was announced.

To top it off - I'm the project manager in charge of the transfer of the IT systems & data over to the Nationwide kit and it's basically finished now. My last goal on the overall project plan is to pack my bags 🙁

So anyone looking for a Bournemouth/Southampton based Project or Development manager specialising in Insurance with 20 years experience then give me a call...
