My niece is currently a Child Services Commissioning Officer who is completely frazzled by her work. And has only received a 1% pay rise this year. She's really looking for a way out but is like a rabbit-in-headlights and doesn't know which way to turn, so just stays put getting ever more depressed.

She could go back to teaching (did 2 years as 6th form teacher straight from Uni), but was scarred by that experience. Just chucked in at the deep end teaching Psychology to 6th form students with zero back-up from the school.

Are there recruitment agencies that specialise in these kind of roles - or what other roles could transfer her skills to?

Or are there private companies she should consider jumping ship to?

I'm a humble colouring-in person so I don't move in such circles! 🙂

All I know is my wife works in insurance and has had good experiences with recruitment companies contacting her on LinkedIn.

Is she with a local authority, as that seems low - MrsMC works for childrens services in Derbyshire and got 5%.

There's certainly a competitive market between local authorities, though the shittiest pay best.

^ yeah, one of the teams in my section is the commissioning and placements team...a thankless task thanks to the ****ing Tory **** policy of ****ing up public services.

However, if she's in commissioning, she's working for a local authority or Trust, so will be getting a payrise that is better than 1%.

an increase of £1,925 (pro rata for part-time employees) to be paid as a consolidated, permanent addition on all National Joint Council (NJC) pay points two to 43 inclusive. This equates to a 9.42% pay increase for the lowest point through to 3.88% for the highest point on the scale.

This is what she needs to look into.

Needs to be honest about her skills. We've just binned over half of our recent applicants who are looking for 'The Good Life' in a job, and so want to apply thier skills as a solicitor / tax consultant / team leader in call centre to teaching teachers to go lead learning outdoors or advise on school grounds design.....

Assuming her current role is with a local authority, her skills and experience might be useful in a charity working with children (e.g. SEND or learning disability provision) in a business development role which would involve responding to commissioning and tendering processes. Jobs may be advertised on the charityjob.co.uk website or the Guardian, as well as any specific sector publications.

I went throught something similar

People like this don't realise the skillset hey have

Get her to list everything she does

Think about how these skills might be transferred to other domains

E.g. conflict resolution, mentoring, negotiation are all excellent people management skills, and customer facing (not necessarily the general public but other business) skills

Start by picking an industry you like the sound of, look at what jobs and what skills they are asking for, think about whether you can say something about yourself that relates

Don't worry if you don't match all the skills

Bin off schools CV writing workshops. Companies use ATS to auto analyse CVs these days, use jobscan.co to analyse your CV against the job description and get the keywords in

Draft a cover letter, use chatGPT to improve it against the the job description

Hit submit

Remember if you get a job, you do not have to do it for the rest of your life. Do a couple of years, get some experience to add to your CV and use it to decide what to do next.
