Mmmm? So, following on from my 'interview should I tell my employer' thread, one way or another I went to the interview. So I got offered the job, but they wanted someone to start really soon and it's half way across the country. I wasn't that impressed by the area I'd be working in, basically it's almost like a step backwards in equipment and facilities so came away thinking maybe not for me at the moment plus it would be a bit of a nightmare to move at the moment, so turned it down. I did mention if I was to start later in the year (next year) it might have been better for us. So they've now offered it to me to start next September, salary very close to what I get now to work 1 hour less a day and a 34 week year!
Thing is, when we got back we kind of realised that what we have here is quite good, home, job etc. We like the idea of moving but I also find it daunting. We'd move to somewhere with cheaper housing and good mtbing, much shorter commute - currently takes me an hour each way and it's only 12 miles, I'll be able to park where I work - can't at the moment as it's all permit or expensive, it would be good to go somewhere new, but I'm not that excited about the job.
I think it might have been a case of thinking the grass is greener on the other side and the reality is that it's good where we are really.
Don't know what to do or think at the moment, my mind is spinning. I know in the end it's up to me (us) but just felt like posting 😕
Any thoughts?
In some way I'm thinking as I'm not jumping at the chance it's not the right thing to do, but then again we might feel different in 6 months time. 😐
All depends on location.
But it does sound preferable to move on the info youve given so far
All other things aside,
Which job would you rather spend a third of your life doing? Take that one, life's too short to hate your job. The rest is gravy.
An hour for 12 miles? Cycle to work you lunatic.
Accept the offer, you have at least 6 months to actually make the decision.
Doesn’t matter how much greener the grass is, you still have to mow it...

At the moment I drive half way and cycle half way, if I cycle all the way or get the bus or even drive and find somewhere to park it all takes an hour.

I'm wondering if you do something like that and change your mind in 6 months if there's any implications? They said they would employ someone short term until September.
I don't think I would hate the new job, maybe just not feel as satisfied, it might be a bit boring.
Location now south coast near SDW, move to Devon near Dartmoor

We discussed this a few days ago. People have loyalties to companies but but companies do not have loyalties to people. A business will go "oh" and find someone else.

Don't do it then.
So both locations excellent for outdoor lifestyle. Extra time off with the new job is a huge benefit, negates extra driving time to airports / channel tunnel etc. Your money will go much further there wrt housing amd with the extra time off ... 🙂
Negatives - my sister just came back afer 10 years in Devon. She loved it there but her three kids all want jobs and so have come back to Hampshire. She has also found that in 10yrs Devon house prices have been static whilst Hampshire is up 50% plus. So changing your mind could be expensive
If you like your current job probably best to stay in it as actually liking your job is a pretty rare thing. If you just think you'd dislike the new job more then I guess it depends how much, sounds like there's quite a few lifestyle positives to relocating. Depends a lot on your wife to, would she be happy to move or just do it as she thinks it's best for you? If the latter then don't bother.
Wait a minute - a 34 week working year? so you get 18 weeks off? I.e 90 working days holiday? Oh just checked previous thread, you work in a school.
So - where would I prefer to spend all that time off, south coast or Devon? Devon, without a shadow of a doubt.
If you own your property, I would rent it out, and rent in Devon, at least short term. Means you can always go back, and you don't have the issue of house prices moving. Even better would be to buy a second home in Devon and keep your current.
To me, the move is a no-brainer. Nicer people, nicer area, more outdoors, more laid-back.

This happened to my family, my parent still live in North Wales, we all moved (Bristol/New York/Manchester). Just because your kids want jobs doesn't mean you have to move.
Also, 12 mile commute. Why aren't you cycling that? Should easily be able to do in less than an hour.
If you aren't enthusiastic and aren't jumping at the opportunity you clearly don't want it enough.

Add in faff after of showering/changing and you're probably still back up to an hour though
People in Devon “much nicer” than Sussex ? Not so sure. I love the West Country, Dartmouth is my favourite regatta, excellent walking and biking. Would I see that as a major uptick versus Sussex or rural/semi rural Hampshire, no not for me. I had better mtb-ing from my door in central Guildford than I do now in semi-rural Hampshire.
If you’re a teacher now so already get the 18 weeks off I would stay put based on what you are saying
It’s complicated
What do you teach? Perhaps the reason you're so attractive to them is that you can help them improve facilities etc.
I'm not sure that offering you one less hour a day is that relevant given what I read on here so frequently about out-of-hours extra work that teachers have to do.
How soon do you need to let them know? There is nothing stopping you taking a couple of weekends to explore the new area.
Given the property price differential, you could find it a lot harder to move back in a couple of years. But then again, I have a feeling that London is definitely at the top of the market currently, and moving your capital away for a couple of years might actually work in your favour.
Always tricky making a big move. But why did you apply for a job in the SW in the first place? Must have been a reason.

South hams is a heavily London influenced bubble, hardly representative of Devon and the west country.
I grew up in the south east, moved SW for university and never left. You couldn’t pay me enough to get me back in the SE.
"I know in the end it's up to me".....you wish. What does the wife want to do?Everything else is somewhat academic.
Comments about "nicer people" are totally moot, that's so hugely subjective it's an utter irrelevance unless you happen to know everyone in the OP's street, and everyone in the immediate locale of where he'd be moving no one can make anything approaching a quantitative assessment, it's idiocy to even talk about it.
Nicer area is pretty similar. There are some shit holes everywhere, sweeping generalisations about "Devon is nicer than the South East" are just retarded. Middle of the South Downs versus a council estate in Plymouth? Devon is definitely nicer 🙄
Would I do it in your position OP? No. Same money, no deal. But I'm not you, no one else is, so you need to decide on your priorities. 12 mile commute sounds good to me.
Not much info about the actual job you have and job you’ve been offered.
You say you won’t in a school, but I’m guessing you aren’t a teacher ?
The jobs are the thing people will be able to advise on most I would think.
And possibly more details of the place you currently live, or would be moving to would help also.
Thanks for all he responses.
Little more info. I'm support staff, so not the same pressure as teaching so when my day finishes I'm off. Reason for applying for the job is that we know the area a little bit and I've always said if a job comes up there I'd apply. One came up so I applied as you never know unless you go and see the place, meet the people, see where you'd be working. We also liked the idea of releasing a bit of ££s from current property, paying off (small) mortgage etc. moving to somewhere else, new things to do and see etc. The department I'm in now has a lot of up to date equipment that I get to play around with, cnc lathe, milling, routing machines, 3D printer, laser cutter. The new place doesn't have these, it's more traditional hands on stuff which is great but I think I'd miss utilising those skills. They were interested in ideas I had and projects we've done and I've got more skills and experience than they need really.
The wife has mixed feelings. Was excited at first, like myself, but then realised what we've got at the moment is good. Easy links to Brighton, London, friends, family, SDW on my door step. We live in a nice quiet area that we know very well near the coast. Thinking more about it maybe it's just not the right time, maybe something like that in 5 years time. I think it was worth going to the interview, but it doesn't seem right at the moment.
It's been good reading the comments here and just thinking about it and typing stuff has helped so ,again, thanks all. 😀
