My first attempt at possibly landing a job in a managerial role tomorrow morning.
Any advice or top tips for my interview?
I'm pretty experienced in the environment but have never been a manager.
I could really do with this job so need to nail this interview...
What's your best advice
Thank in advance
Be yourself, but try to anticipate what the recruiter is looking for and demonstrate how you meet their needs more than any other candidate possibly could. Apply your past experience to the current and future needs of the recruiter.
Apear ambitious for yourself i.e. "I want to develop, learn new skills, take on big responsibilities to drive success", but don't give the impression that the role is a stepping stone in your career.
Smile, be confident and mirror the behaviour of the interviewer.
This is all generic stuff, would need to know more on the job and your suitability to help further. Good luck!
Confidence and have some examples of how you have lead a team in the past within your field.
Who's doing the interview. You have to prepare v differently for HR [s]muppets[/s] folk than for others.
Practise keeping answers very tight. Three point and wrap up. Watch interviewers body language to see if it's appropriate to develop the point further.
If competency based, practice the STAR technique.
Imagine the world possible questions and prepare for them including stupid ones like what are your biggest weaknesses. They still trot out that kind of nonsense
Good luck
Ah yeah that question what's your strengths....easy.... Relate them to you and the job
What's your weakness.... erm...?
I'm not sure I have any weakness (as afar as the job is concerned anyway)... Is that too arrogant?
Get ready for some competency interview questions as I got loads of those recently. Supposed to use the STAR framework
The SITUATION AND TASK forms an introduction, describing the scenario you faced, time and place.
The ACTION forms the main body and should be the longest part.
The RESULT is the conclusion, and, like the introduction, should be quite short.
Time for this classic...
Edit - argh, cross post!
No weaknesses? Really?
'm not sure I have any weakness (as afar as the job is concerned anyway)... Is that too arrogant?
THat could be what the interviewer asks next as a follow up
two general responses
1) BS something like i am such a perfectionist I find it hard to delicate to people till I know they can work to my standards or some such - possibly not the best for a management question
SOmetimes I take on too much work to the detriment of my family life
2) tell them something they already know. I have limited experience of management but i feel I am ready for this challenge because of then sell yourself
Do what THM said as well and best of luck
Think of some points about yourself, that you definitely want to say to them e.g. your competence re their job spec etc (say 10). Irrespective of the questions asked, make sure you get those points into your answers. To help with this too, take notes in with you that have these points on and maybe some questions you may want to ask.
Dont slag off your previous /current employer
Have a few questions ready to ask about your new employer.
Do some research into the new company. facebook/ website/ acheivements .
I was asked about weaknesses at a second stage interview. I decided that this wasn't the sort of company that I wanted to work for. I have weaknesses, I know what they are and I know how I deal with them.
It's a lazy question.
Tip: No bullshit.
Good luck
Play it by ear, but if it starts going badly ... get on your knees and beg.
As above, be yourself. I think its important that you interview them too, its a two way thing working for someone. Do you want to work for them? Don't be desperate. As mentioned above do as much research as possible about the company and people. Ask about training.
Just so you know, if it is competency based (God help you if it is, awful things), STAR is increasingly becoming STARR - the last 'R' being reflection.
So, you could say after your example, if questioned, "next time I'd have done this bit differently" or "doing this bit worked really well and I'd do it again".
All bloody bobbins though and I hope for you it's not a competency based interview!
The whole "weakness" thing - I tend to think more in terms of preferences rather than weaknesses. It's only a weakness in a certain context when certain skills or behaviours are required. So I don't enjoy running things on a day to day basis - I'm much more motivated by roles that are focused on creating and setting up things initially. When they are up and running I get bored and lose interest. Is that a weakness? Only in a certain type of role which I would want to do anyway.
Weaknesses?
Jaffa cakes.
Seemed to go down alright as an answer at my last interview, got the job anyway.
If it's managing staff and you've not done it before, get ready for the killer question.
"So, you are applying for the managers position but you have no leadership experience. Tell us how you can make the jump to be the team leader, what can you bring to the table?"
Maybe only you know the answer to this question, because I don't just get ready for it.
Be confident but not cocky.
Make them want to offer you the job.
And remember most people hate interviewing as much at you hate sitting in front of them, so make sure you leave them with a lasting memory of you.
I've got an interview tomorrow too and I know it will be behavioral, I've had these before and got the job, I research common questions and write down my answers and practice a couple of times, the only one that caught me out once was 'tell us of a time you made a difference at work'
These interviews pander to fly boys if you ask me, you get the job and all your colleagues talk a good game but not much else
Listen to question.
Answer question.
Sounds simple, but so many people forget!
Also, make sure you ask for a glass of water. If you find yourself needing a little time to think, a slow sip of water can give you that moment you need.
Thanks for all the tips guys, I'll let you know how I get on.
Off to be bed now, early night and all that...
Hang on, nobody's mentioned writing the names of the interviewers in biro on your cock ?
🙄
Hang on, nobody's mentioned writing the names of the interviewers in biro on your cock ?
Are you supposed to do that just after meeting them? One at a time, or after you've shaken all their hands?
Are you supposed to do that just after meeting them?
Ah, hello. My name is Mr Picasso. What's that? You'd like my full name?.......
Get a good nights rest too so you're sharp for tomorrow.
Good luck and enjoy the experience.
