No. 1 spawn is going on a school trip involving Jet2.

Having had a look at the hand luggage rules, is she going to get away with a bag that is shorter, a decent bit narrower, but slightly deeper than the dimensions (29 vs 25 cm)? Common sense would suggest the cubic volume is less so it should be fine, but when did common sense apply?

I've flown with Jet2 from Newcastle to Faro a couple of times.

They seem fairly laid back about hand luggage compared to other budget airlines.

They never asked me to weigh my hand baggage and I didn't see anyone getting made to check theirs.

YMMV.

I don’t think it’s about volume, I think the dimensions are to ensure it can fit in the overhead lockers or under the seat.

I’m also assuming that unless it’s jammed solid it’ll probably squash within the limit?

I booked a seat with Ryanair with the minimum sized hand luggage.  The gate staff saw my boarding pass and pointed to the bag check frame.  Fortunately I'd bought a bag from Argos that was a perfect fit and it dropped straight in.  I think they were both surprised and disappointed, given that I'd have had to pay an upgrade if it hadn't.

Depends on the airline though.  When I came back from Western Sahara last year on Royal Air Maroc most people seemed to bring on about 3 full size suitcases.  I think chickens would have been OK but they would have drawn the line at goats.

Jet2 Manchester weighed my hand luggage, I had to put some extra layers on which is a bit silly really, same weight going in plane.  Usually jet2 are a bit relaxed I must have just caught someone on a bad day.

There was a thread on this a few days ago.  Someone got pulled up by... Ryanair I think? for a carry-on which was nominally out.  Cost them £75.  I wouldn't chance it personally.  4cm is not inconsiderable unless it's a soft case you can squish down.

I got bitten also a few years ago, I've used the same hand luggage since the 1990s, got checked on a trip to the US a couple of years ago and it didn't fit through the measuring doofer because the castors fouled on it.  They let me proceed in the end because I managed to lever it in past the frame but they made a big song & dance about how lucky I was.  I don't recall which airline it was now (but it certainly wasn't Ryanair because I'd rather walk).

It would be a soft bag she can squash down if that helps?

Should be fine. Jet2 are pretty generous with cabin baggage and they also allow a smaller under seat bag. I travel with them a fair bit and don't take the piss (you see folks frankly pushing it) but wander through with a medium sized rucksack that can squash if necessary and no one has ever battered an eye lid. I'd never do that with Ryanair

Jet2 != Ticketmaster Airlines (Ryanair)

This is why you fly Jet2, not Ryanair.

It'll be absolutely fine.

How is she going to pay the extra fee if she is pulled up on it?

Personally I'd get the correct sized bag and not put my daughter in a potentially embarrassing situation.

As long as the bag is squishable, she'll likely be fine.  Check in/Gate staff tend to target hard cases and those that look like they are truly taking the pee.

I'd still be putting an airtag in it just to be on the safe side though.

Ryanair/easyjet absolutely wouldn't chance it. Jet2 I think would be fine, I've never seen them check bags although personally all my luggage has been bought specifically to be the "correct" size anyway, just to take any of that stress out of the equation!

If you do decide to buy her a bag specifically to be the right size:

https://www.cabinzero.com/collections/jet2-baggage-allowance

They don't include some of their larger bags in their Jet2 approved list but a manual check suggests that they are within the Cabin Baggage (not under seat personal item) limit.

We've dragged our Cabin Zero bags round Europe and Canada along with numerous other trips and they have been spot on and holding up well.
