Here is something I cooked up on the stove using all the same ingredients put in exactly the same jar...As you would've got if I'd have spent all of £1.50 down the supermarket to buy you...a jar of jam 🤣

My wife thinks I'm a weird bugger - but how do I know loveable granny Edith wasn't picking her nose and scratching her arse then dipping her finger in the jam to taste? All the while her dozen cats merrily walk all over the worktops. And using her donkeys years old jam making pot that hasn't been cleaned properly in years.

I used to visit my old nan and she used to offer me homemade stuff and I'd sneak out to the shop for something in a packet. How do I know the thing she was offering me wasn't already full of mould and cat-hair when she put it in her freezer in the 50's? Gives me the dry-heaves.
But then I'll happily eat restaurant food and I've worked and seen what goes on in even the most upmarket of establishments... weird.

As a student some friends worked in a food processing place (South Milford nr Leeds IIRC) on the night shifts - they used to dare each other to put the most revolting things they could think of into the big vats of animal bits that were being processed to make pork pie fillings etc. How on earth I will still eat that sort of stuff I will never really know.

TBH I got mrs DOD into Lidl the usual shop was M@S who were actually surprisingly reasonable if you didn't go mad.
Wasn't a money we thing we just found we actually liked a lot of stuff from there, carnation coleslaw(yum yum).
In spain I tend to buy a lot of hacendando own brand stuff, the greek youghart is lush with a sprinkling of choc chips and oat granola from Spanish co-op.
I do miss a lot of the M@S meals, over here they expect you to cook stuff.
Course when I finally do come back over I'm going to be in a state of shock over the prices of everything 🙂

The whole point of jam is that you've boiled it upto ~110C, granny Ediths bum boogers and cat hair protein have long since denatured into nothing.
And even the WI now requires yo to have a food hygiene qualification before selling stuff.

Gooseberry jam is definitely the best and not often in the shops so home made or none.
Most people with fruit gluts that I know have council allotments.
I don't recommend marrow jam which I made once from a donated one.
I am fortunate to have fruit trees and allotment space so plenty of jam and buckets of cooking apples currently being processed and distributed.
I do make jam.
Chutney is definitely my favourite.

Yep I'd also add the sugar acts as a preservative sort of possibility of it lasting a fair old few years.

TBH I do let my dogs lick the bowl after I've had greek Yoghurt, but i'd not be happy with them tucking in with me.
Oddly they really like yoghurt, its not something I'd think a dog would go for but they do.

Barley and wheat price is very high too, i suppose the drought reduced grass production and the farmers are having to feed wheat, which has doubles in price

Because it was called SUPER JAM. As I said: that's a bold claim. I'm not bothered about cheap. If I'm looking to save money I'll just not buy jam rather than cheap jam. Anyway, why is it not jam? Looked like jam, tasted like jam?

Real jam is roughly half fruit half sugar and the pectin in the fruit makes it set*.
Super jam uses fruit concentrates instead of sugar in the claim that it is healthier. Looking at the ingredients it includes added fruit pectins to so potentially even more processed than normal jam.
There is enough pectin in fruit for jam to set without adding it.
Like all low sugar 'jams' you have to keep super jam in the fridge to stop it going mouldy. Real jam lasts months in the cupboard after opening unless you leave a load of crumbs or butter smears in it.
* Strawberry jam is 4 fruit to 3 sugar by weight and you add lemon juice to encourage the pectin out. Plum jam is often slightly greater fruit ratio too as the fruit has more sugar in it. Berries normally 1:1 (pedants know that Strawberries aren't actually berries).
P.S. if you're concerned about the sugar content of jam don't even think about marmalade.

Right. Thanks for that. I had no idea SUPER JAM was just a façade for healthy. If I knew it was healthy/reduced anything I would never have bought it. I'd never heard of the brand and naturally assumed SUPER JAM would be like normal jam but with MORE sugar and MORE fruit.
I feel like I've been had... duped if you will. Now I know it's healthy jam it's going to taste horrible isn't it. I'm phoning the police in the morning.
to make my own jam I would have to invest significant time - and I charge a high hourly rate for my free time.
Only now as we have a garden and know how much jam we make have we planted trees and bushes to supply our habit.
