Hi all,

OK, thinking of buying a Canon SX220 (or similar) soon, around £200, Jessops seems to have a decent price at the moment.

They do a 3year repair scheme for £50 extra which is very tempting.

http://www.jessops.com/PhotoPlus

Anyone used this before? Looks tempting, especially as I will be using my camera for biking/snowboarding/travelling, and I managed to kill my old TZ7 in about a year after dropping it in sand a few times..

Only thing I don't like so far is that it doesn't seem to cover damage from water or frost (ie snow)..

Any thoughts? How quickly do they mend the camera once you return it?

Or are there any other companies that offer a similar scheme, maybe for less?

Thanks, Duane.

I bought a camera and lens off here that the owner had taken the jessops care out with. Not longer after I bought it, the lens developed a fault.
There were no problems about transferring the warranty or getting the lens fixed - it didn't cost me a penny.

IIRC you have to send it away rather than drop it into your local branch though.

Overall, I'd recommend it.

get a quote from photoguard

Photoguard

Not restricted to your photographic equipment either, can list associated laptops etc.

I have used them for several years, with one claim when a Lens was pilfered in South America and paid out with no hassle. I'd rather a replace like for like no matter what policy than a repair one.

Remembering as well that the majority of "spontaneous" faults would be covered under warranty / sale of goods act anyway.

Thanks, just got a quick quote from Photoguard - for worldwide cover, with vehicle cover, and a camera value of £200 it gave me £31 per year :/

Was looking at the warrenty on Canons, but couldn't find too much. They don't normally cover accidental damage do they (ie if I dropped it while biking, or into sand, or whatever)?

No, they will cover against any mechanical faults, hence the only thing you'd need to insure against is the accidental damage.

Bear in mind would you keep and use the same camera for three years?

Just having a quick look at the site, looks like for up to £1000 the policy cost stays at £31 per annum so other option is to get cover for all your electronics / camera gear as part of the same policy.

imho its not worth paying £50 on a £200 camera.

ear after dropping it in sand a few times..

Does it cover you for that? I know years back it would not cover sand or impact dammage.

Do you have a home contents policy, check to see what it would cost you to add it to that for the above sort of cover.

Staff used to get £1 commision years (many) back for every one they sold, I know someone who used to pay for a two week decent Holl. to the USA every year with the quanity he sold 😉

Most in that price bracket would not be worth repairing & if they did it could take 4 weeks to sort out & no it would not go to Canon for the repair either 😉
