Well who knew that a Jellyfish expert was called a jellyologist.
Said jellyologist (on this morning's breakfast news) said there was a huge influx of jellyfish around our shores this year and if a person gets stung, not to wee on the sting, but put hot water and vinegar onto the stung area.
Maybe climate change or maybe the big storms we've been having are bringing these fascinating creatures in.
We saw loads of jelly fish on the beaches of Northern France in September.
Surely you are more likely to have access to urine than vinegar whilst loitering around the beach?
Presumably the neutralising effect is from the acidity?
You tend to get 'blooms' of jellies around early summer (May onwards) in North Wales.
We had some huge jellyfish blooms up here in the summer - hundreds of metres long  all along the coast with some inlets and coves absolutely choked. Hitting a big lion’s mane with your kayak is a big thump and had to be careful not to get a tendril caught around the paddle, flicked onto your skin. Coming ashore and having the paddle your way through them.
Credit card is so a bit of a win for jelly stings - wipe it gently along the persons sting 'against the grain' of the way the barbs went in.
A-ha... thats for the tip. No wonder my chips tasted funny and my wee stings a bit....Â
presumably - urine is not necessarily acid though so could have no effect (or make it worse?)Presumably the neutralising effect is from the acidity?
Fairy nuff. It's unlikely to be alkaline though no? Could it really make it worse?
Edit:
"Vinegar is used to stop the venom in stingers. Caution: Do not use ammonia, urine, rubbing alcohol, fresh water or ice. They all can trigger the release of more venom. If you don't have vinegar, move on to scraping off the stingers."
Loads of them around Orkney during the summer I noticed.

Kind of makes you wonder what a jelly expert is called 🤔
quick google suggest normal range is  between 4.5 and 8 so could be slightly alkaline. Probably the worst thing that could happen is you piss on someone for no reason I guess 🤷♂️ which could make your relationship with that person worse 😂It’s unlikely to be alkaline though no? Could it really make it worse?
Beautiful creatures Jellyfish.
The largest Jellyfish I have seen in my life is about the size of medium beer keg. Due to its size and in a rather shallow water (chest height) they look as if they can "walk" in the water.
During the Jellyfish season, as a kid in North Borneo, we used to hang around the bridges (bridge linking the houses on stilt in my village) we would try to count the Jellyfish and to spot the beautiful ones. The small ones are very cute. My house was on the shore just about 20 metres from the sea. Only occasionally we see the very dangerous ones like box Jellyfish. Fascinating time of my life.
