All you people not washing your jeans are just manky buggers
The only report I’ve seen of anyone looking at this even vaguely scientifically concluded that washing jeans wasn’t necessary.
The not washing thing is only appropriate with selvedge indigo denim where the dye is genuine natural indigo, which has inherent antibiotic qualities and a very distinctive musty sort of smell, like shrink-to-fit selvedge 501’s used to have.
Most denim uses chemical dye, which isn’t antibacterial.
And doesn’t smell as good, or fade as well.
I second Uniqlo Japanese selvedge jeans, straight-cut of course, none of that boot-cut nonsense! The shame is that Uniqlo no longer do their real heavy indigo selvedge jeans with button fly; they were twice the price of the ones they do now, around £70, but they’re superb quality, having said that, their current ones are extremely good value and very comfy, and the closest I’ve found to my thirty-odd year old 501’s.
And I do wear boots most of the time, Meindle Desert boots, which work perfectly with good straight-cut jeans.
Women’s jeans at the moment are all skinny fit which are really narrow at the ankle, no other choice, which isn’t a great look when you have cyclist’s thighs!
Have always struggled to find jeans for that fit well. Similar to you, big thighs but not fat.
A couple of weeks ago I was walking past Gap with a 30% off promotion. Found a style ,their athlete fit which are slim but have more thigh room which are the best fitting jeans I’ve had for years. Decent quality and I only paid £30.
Gap outlet here. Buy a slightly looser style for home slightly tighter (smarter) for work. Last for ages washing them after wearing for 3-4 days / until they get muddy
re. Shirts in the op, I really rate red herring shirts in Debenhams, cheapish, often discounted, and last well

Just go to TK Maxx. Forget looking at brands just find some in your size, try em on, go to the pub.

The 511 Commuter is a traditional jean. I just got the new Commuter Pro, which is a lot more technical & better for riding. The pockets are mesh & hopefully the cordura fabric won't wear through the bum so quick.

Good eye Trail Rat spotting the boots. I've got a couple of pairs of desert army boots, but then I have desert here so I feel justified in wearing them. With TAD shorts though....

If that’s a response to my post, read it again, I specifically said I wear straight cut jeans, not boot-cut, I’ve never worn boot-cut in my life!
Straight-cut 501’s with triangular inserts to make flares, yes, but that was a 70’s thing, and didn’t last long!
I wear my Desert Fox boots pretty much all the time, they’re the most comfy boots I’ve ever had, and I’ve got four pairs now, two in regular use, being swapped to spread the wear, and two new pairs in reserve. All from eBay, none cost more than £35/pair. 😁

Thats funny! In most species it’s the male that’s the most striking and colourful, not the female...
Anyway, a lot of really cheap denim feels thin, and the cut means they pretty much fit where they touch, a blue version of cheap men’s slacks. The Uniqlo selvedge denim jeans are around £40, and remind me very much of Levi’s 501’s from the 70’s, of which I still have a couple of pairs, and I can, just, (but only just), fit into! When a pair of average trainers or Vans skate shoes can cost £30 more, they’re hardly breaking the bank.
I like jeans. I wear them to work every day so I like to but good ones. Break them in at work then wear them for casual when they are nice and faded.
I don't go to the lengths of paying £250 for the japanese stuff so I don't qualify as a full denim snob.
I like Nudie as a company, great ethic and really nice looking jeans but their denim hasn't impressed me and the chap who's expecting 3 years from a pair might be disappointed. They use quite light denim unless you spend ££££s for a heavier special.
The ED55 is a really great cut, one of the few with a nice tapered cut with room in the thigh for cyclist types. The rise is about perfect too. I ended up a bit disappointed with how they faded though, they went all streaky which after a year of wear was rubbish.
The uniqlo's are actually very nice jeans. Not quite up to the standard of the others mentioned here but by far and away the best value.
I stick with Lee 101 now. The 101z is a roomier straighter cut and great for casual/knocking around in. The 101s is my favourite overall, not a million miles away from the ED55 but the denim and the manufacture is considerably better. I always seem to be able to pick a pair up in the sales so don't be misled by the RRP. I honestly think they're the best you'll get without stepping up to the japanese stuff although I have been meaning to try a pair of Tellasons.

Tesco Slim Stretch for work and the (horsey) yard as I can ride in them, and at £15 a shot I don't care when they get trashed (which they will). Generally have 2-3 pairs on rotation. Next Slim Stretch for going out (which is about twice a month) so spending above £30 on a pair seems completely pointless when I could spend it on far more interesting things than jeans .

£30 or less if you catch a sale, and they fit my big arse and thighs very well, perhaps the best I've tried. 501 are ludicrous for those with any kind of lower body muscle in my experience!
i don't think i've ever paid more than £30 for jeans, currently wearing some i got from gap in their sale. one note though you need thighs like Chris Hoy to fill out their "athletic" cut jeans, they looked like a circus big top on each leg on me.
for work i wear H&M ones which last about a year of bike servicing and associated lube, grease, dirt and fluid contamination and cost around £20
Plenty of GAP recommendations but the votes are swinging Levi/Uniglo at present.
If we get enough umps I'm sure we can get Primani up amongst the top 3..

What size are you Are. I have a pair of Tellason John Graham Mellor which I'll never fit in again. Only worn them around the house to try and break them in so minimal creases.

There are people I work with who think that anyone who spends more than £500 on a bike is an idiot!!! These are the same people who spend what I consider to be a ridiculous amount of money on a bottle of wine. We like what we like!
Carhartt Texas, best jeans I've ever owned. Usually a bargain at £75, just ordered a pair on their website for £30. Go down an inch on the waist.
I've also got a number of their duck carpenter's jeans, durable and fit well but I've only ever seen them in the US. In Europe it's all WIP.

Just looking at that there Carhartt site - anyone any experience with the Buccaneer pants for sizing? Looking at the size guide they're a regular tapered fit but the measurements look like i'd need to size down a size or two - waist on the 32" is showing measured as 18" across which would be 36" in real money - the rigid ones would shrink a bit, but how much?

Their Texas jeans have a faux selvedge so if you order 2 inches longer you get a nice hipster-cool turnup.

One size fits all. Sash, cummerbund or belt and buckle essential. If gong the buckle route, then I recommend Swash.

sorry, but that was a clear invocation, hence:
not got the bucaneer specifically but i can tell you i am a 33w /34l in caharrtt - noramlly i wear a 34/34 in other manufacturers because thats usually all inferior manufacturers make and i have to put a belt on.
So id say they are pretty true to size unless anyone thats met me wants to pipe in that im a bloater and my waist is actually a 36"+

Short-arse syndrome means pretty much all my jeans have turn-ups of some description - amazing what you can find in there after a night out 🙂
