A long shot I know and probably best asking on a farming type forum... However stw usually comes up trumps.
At work we use a JCB workmax atv, it’s been sat unused for 3 days as I’ve been off and my boss is on holiday, came to use it this morning, checked it all over, switched battery on, checked fuel, inserted ignition key (all lights on display came on) let it warm up, fan comes on, turned key - nothing, well a loud “click” coming from behind the passenger seat somewhere.
As mentioned my boss is off and there’s no one else at work until Monday who may be of some help (I’m working tomorrow and need to use it) I’ve done some googling and all that brings up is lots of people saying don’t buy them.
Any pointers? I wonder if there’s some sort of immobiliser that’s kicked in, however my boss has never mentioned anything like that and we’ve had no problems starting it in the 2 months I’ve been there
If you have a meter , check the battery voltage as you try to crank it. if it doesen't drop below 11 -12 ish then the battery's ok. Then try tapping the back end of the starter in case the brushes are stuck. Could also be the starters solenoid. Haven't worked on a JCB , but have worked on a lot of ATV's
(Also check for loose connection)
Just spotted you said "switched battery on" , battery isolators are pretty good at failing with corrosion internaly. Bypassing it is usually fairly simple.
Thanks, I’ll rummage through maintenance‘s kit tomorrow to find a meter.
Yeah battery isolator key is inserted and turned on.. Gear lever (which has to be in very precise position or it won’t start) is in correct position.
First turn of key lights up the ‘dash’ and fan comes on, the next turn of key, which would normally fire it up, I just get a ‘click’ and nothing
The click sounds like the starter solenoid. My mower does the same thing.... Keep turning the key and it works eventually.
Sounds like your battery might be on the way out.
Cheers.
I don’t like the thing at all, it lurches suddenly to the left when driving at speed (well as fast as the thing goes) and brakes are next to useless, I’d much rather have a Gator or a Mule (I use both at other places of work)
Sounds like it could also be a dodgy earth esp if the battery checks out ok.
I know you’ve all been having sleepless nights wondering about this, well wonder no more! Managed to get to the bottom of it, it was the handbrake! According to the manual it shouldn’t start with the handbrake off (it did/does), the handbrake had been on when I was getting this problem, I tried pulling up on the handbrake as I turned the key (giving it an extra 5mm of travel) and it fired in to life. So I tightened up the handbrake cables and it has been fine since. Thanks for your advice!
