Where would you suggest that does does great sashimi and good hot vegetarian dishes?
well, I enjoyed Yo Sushi the other week...
There is two on Baldwin street. The one on the Queens square side was great first time I went a few years ago but something was missing the second time recently, but maybe it was because it was quiet. I have heard good things about the one on the Corn street side but can't vouch for it myself.
there was one in Clifton but I think it's gone now.
oo turns out there is one on Cotham Hill now too.
Watching for anyones recommendations as I love Japanese.
There's a Yo! Sushi just along from the Wills Building and Bristol museum and art gallery. There used to be a really good pan Asian place in Colston Street, but it's sadly gone now.
The Yo Sushi is in Cabot Circus.
I was looking for something a little more authentic.
this is the place in clifton: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186220-d1841923-Reviews-NOA_Japanese_Restaurant-Bristol_England.html
didn't know it was still there. Seems to be a mixture of reviews.
Cotham Hill place might be worth a look: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186220-d3841434-Reviews-Yume_Kitchen-Bristol_England.html
Might have a gander tomorrow.
Just found this place, in Baldwin Street:

that's the one I mention above (queens sq. side of baldwin st)
Noa is excellent and has nice surroundings and fits the restaurant criteria.
Yume on Cotham Hill is more like a Japanese cafe and I think it closes quite early - I had some lovely sashimi there earlier in the year.
Regularly went to Masa when I lived in Bristol. Food is good - I have been to Japan a few times so know what it should be like and most of the dinners are Japanese which is always a good sign. Atmosphere is a little lacking though.
I just remembered Obento on Baldwin St. I haven't been for a couple of years but the food was excellent then.

second vote for obento here. i'd steer clear of the one on the other side of baldwin street.
Noa in Clifton is also good. there's not a whole heap of choice though!
another recommendation for Noa, last time I was there is was very good.
I had a really good meal in Noa.
