We are considering a weekend in the campervan round the North York Moors over the next few weeks and don't know the area at all. We are open to biking (natural or trail centre) or hiking. Don't need anything too gnarly but do fancy pleasant views and ideally not muddy type 2 fun. We also need at least one good food pub within easy walking distance.
Any advice on good campsites, best general location, must do rides/walks and of course fantastic pubs would be very gratefully received.
Thank you for all your help.
Can't really help with the campsite/pub but most of my biking is on the North York Moors, which is actually quite a large and diverse area. The trails around Sutton Bank visitor centre are a mixture of man-made, trail centre type tracks and old bridleways, all signposted and taking in "the finest view in England" as they modestly call it on their signpost. A little further North there is some good riding around Osmotherley, which does have a camp site and some good pubs. The area around Carlton Bank/Clay Bank has some good riding, as does the Great Ayton area especially around Guisborough Woods and Captain Cooks Monument, although Guisborough Woods is muddy at the moment and most of the trails take some finding.
I have a blog here, mainly moors riding.
and a youtube channel here
Sweet. Thanks mate.
NYM local here. There's a good camp site at Fletchers Farm, nr Great Ayton. Worth checking if that's open as there are good pub, riding and walking options from there.
Dalby Forest is at the other end of the moors and is a big trail centre, I believe there are campsites nearby.
Great walks around Goathland, particularly suited to winter as most of it is down in the valleys exploring paths beside waterfalls.
Somewhere near Danby would be good as there's plenty of great rides/walks around there. Near the coast and Whitby too if you fancy a change of scenery.
Yep Danby is great shout, right in the middle. I'm not sure about campsites though, I know there are some small sites around there but unsure about Winter opening. The Yorkshire Bike Hub is near Danby and good place to start or stop in on during a ride.
ideally not muddy type 2 fun
I think you'll have to accept a degree of this in January!
Sigh. Yeah, I know. I'm wondering if i would actually rather get a nice B&B in Whitby and enjoy some long coastal walks followed by a dinner in front of the log fire of a lovely pub.
I'm struggling to find enthusiasm for another soggy mudfest on the bike even though I know I will enjoy it once we get going.
I'm torn really.
I recommend the yorkshire cycle hub too, it’s just near Fryup and the cafe’s spot on, great bike shop and they can even recommend some great routes too....roaring fire when you get back too!
A cafe in Fryup! I'm in.
