I'm about to replace my Grande Espace and have my eyes on a 2007/08 Jag S-Type Sport... 2.7 diesel in black (that's v important).
I know they're not to everyone's taste but I've always liked so thought it may just be time I took the plunge.

It looks like £5k will get me a 70/90 thousand miler, with [full] service history. Has any one on here got any experiences of them either as an owner or in the trade?

I've looked on pistonheads but tbh the views are pretty much split which is giving me the jitters (the Espace has been horrendous so trying to avoid similar reliability issues)...

Chap at work bought one last year about the same vintage, he's had horrendous problems with electrical issues.

It's like it's got a constantly bad earth.

Had mine a couple of years now and like it, comfy on long runs and surprising agile when it pick up its skirts. The later cars started to get the suspension upgrades as they were developed for the introduction of XF (same underpinnings and engine(initially)).
Yes, its had the odd problem (MOT related) but nothing more than expected on a 10+ year old car.
Performance is good, initial take off is adequate but really gets going once its shifted up the gears. However its best performance range is, unfortunately illegal. Consumptions is not as good as the book figure, mines averaged 34mpg over the 20K miles I’ve done.
The gear box is the ZF 6 speed and should be seamless in operation but will need an oil change at 70k miles although Jag original said it was sealed for life, not cheap but worth it to keep the ‘box in good condition. Have the adaptations reset at the same time. Also the cam belt needs changing at 105k or 10 years. Jag dealers run a 3plus years fixed service scheme and can work out better value than many indies.
Yes there are reported electrical problems but most of them are due to a failing battery, they seem to be very sensitive to voltage drops.
Heavy on brakes (fronts) and tyres (rear)
These were relatively expensive cars in their day and therefore like most cars of their type can be expensive to keep running now. Give any car a thorough going over; double check for suspension knocks (control arm bushings and drop links) and make sure the HVAC is fully functioning. Remember the old adage, if you couldn’t afford to buy and run one new then they are just as expensive to run second hand.

Can also carry bikes.

The engine is good very under powered for its size so no real engine failures to speak of, a few EGR faults and as someone said due to the big lump and power required to turn it over people don't fit the correct battery as a replacment (1050 amp.) so loads of random electric faults caused by low voltage from cranking.
The later 3.0 Is very good,
Both engines are Peugeot/CITROEN that jag bought in, if that is any issue to you.

Thanks all, not too worried about regular maintenance costs Spence (previously owned Jags) just trying to avoid the horror stories. Your insight is helpful, thanks.

So, these electrical gremlins are they often resolved with the replacement of a new, to-spec, battery?

Should the Peugeot-Citroen lump worry me Chris? My current French 3.0ltr diesel has been a real basket-case tbh - can the French do diesel?

A friend had one and something went wrong with the heater controls and was a £600 fix.Supposed to be a common problem.

I had the same engine in a 2008 XF which I ran for 5 years. It was faultless for that period - felt very quiet and under-stressed. The metal of the engine comes from the PSA/Ford factory in Bridgend but it's heavily fettled by Jaguar. There are various horror stories about DPF issues (as with all diesel engines of that period) but I never saw these. Variants of the same engine were used in various Landrover models. Random and inexplicable electrical issues are usually cured by a new battery.

The xud was commonly seen at 300k - when the rest of the car was falling apart.

Unfortunantly euro emissions standards throttled them and mae them produce "cleaner"* more efficient engines - and just like everyone else in that era they had issues.

* i dont believe chopping up the emissions into smaller parts as many of the bolt ons do actually makes them cleaner but it makes the emissions less detectable ( and more harmful in your lungs)

Can the French do diesel? Yes and they don't have to lie or fiddle (cough VAG) and you'll often find French joint-project/or own diesel engines in more marques than you'd imagine.

Love the thinking OP, brave but classy

Chrisdiesel once showed me a courier 1.6citreon diesel van that was currently on 400,000+ miles

No the PAS shouldn't worry you, from my experience anyway. No DPF issues with me, mainly used for longer journeys. Yes the 3L is a better (powerful) unit especially in S trim, but you have to get in an XF for them.
Yep, random warning lights/messages coming and going is usually the battery. Varta (OE) H3 is a good replacement and should be expected on any car of that age.
The heater control valve, a Bosch unit are about £125 and much easier to change on the diesel, being behind the front bumper as opposed to up under the header tank as on the petrol’s. Speaking of the header tank, the bleed valve can leak after being used for the first time in a while. Mine did at the cam belt change but because they didn’t warn me prior to work being carried out, Jaguar replaced the tank FOC.
If the HVAC is faulty it could be the control module, they are different depending if you’ve got SatNav or not. On the SatNav, the newest disc available is 2012.

With the rear seats down I can get my 29 HT in with the front wheel off.

As I've Said, it's a good engine but hugely under tuned but I don't see many because psa only fit it to c6 c5 plus some big peugeots. I never understood why it's so de tuned from memory it makes 170 bhp in the c6 which is crazy when the new 2.0L 4 cylender diesel makes up to 180 bhp.
But it is very smooth and quiet and a relaxed drive but no horror stories to tell about them at all really possibly because it's so understressed by the low power output.
When I was at the factory they did say that in some of the jags/discos it was killing the rear diff due to its high torque!!!

Well, it's bought. Have gone for an 06 2.7D Sport in black with 80,000 miles on the clock.
And thus far very happy with it, it's going in to Listers on Thursday for a new cambelt.

I very nearly got distracted by a 4.2R but a jag specialist warned me away from that as a weekend special, so next year perhaps ...
